The bowling, tennis, and croquet clubs that make up the Hallyburton Johnstone Sports Club - is under serious threat.
Auckland
For 98 years, the Hallyburton Johnstone Sports Club in Point Chevalier, has faithfully upheld its founder's vision. What began as one man's generous gift of land for bowls, croquet and tennis remains exactly that - thriving sports clubs on the very grounds Hallyburton Johnstone entrusted to this community almost a century ago.
Now, almost a century later, The Anglican Trust for Women and Children (the ATWC) is attempting to argue it is the rightful owner of the site, putting all of this history, community and camaraderie at risk.

Summary of the Community Meeting held on Sunday 22 February:
At the community meeting held at Pt Chevalier Bowling Club on 22 February 2026, speakers explained that the ATWC has filed a High Court claim arguing it is the rightful owner of the land. The club outlined our legal position: that Johnstone’s clear intent was to benefit the Pt Chevalier community, that the trust should be treated as charitable and therefore not require a perpetuity date, that the Trusts Act 2019 would in any case allow the arrangement to run for 125 years (taking it to about 2053 before the land would come fully to the club), and that it is unfair for the ATWC to wait nearly a century before challenging ownership.
