  • Pepper is home!

      11 January 2025

No exercise for 2 weeks, eye drops and eye lubricants for a week, and antibiotics for pneumonia. She's still coughing, and drooling out one side of her mouth which still seems a little paralysed, but we're so glad to have her back ❤

Thank you so much for your donations towards Pepper's treatment!

  • Final invoice paid

      10 January 2025

The total amount due was AUD $11,746.90. This is a bit less than estimated and works out to just over $13,000 NZD. We've updated the goal to reflect this.

    Pupdate: Thursday 9th Jan

We just visited Pepper and she's doing well. She's still a little sedated just to keep her relaxed and not stressed.

But she passed her oxygen test this morning! So no more supplemental oxygen needed. Her breathing still gets wheezy and she starts to cough when she gets excited.

They are going to take her for a walk later today and make sure she's going to the toilet by herself OK.

They're also going to feed her and make sure she is holding food down.

If these go OK, we'll be able to pick her up and take her "home"!

We just checked the bill for what's done so far and it's at $11.5k or so.

We can't thank you all enough for your donations. I feel like a stuck record but our gratitude is endless ❤

Sorry this should be Thursday 9 January!

Pepper is still on supplemental oxygen and antibiotics for her pneumonia, but her respiratory rate is good and her effort is good. She has started hacking so this is a good sign she's trying to clear the gunk in her lungs away.

She is still wearing contacts to heal her eye ulcers - caused by paralysis of her eyelids meaning she wasn't blinking enough.

She has been peeing by herself, and moving around on her own.

Her next steps today are to try some food and see if she can hold it down without regurgitation.

Her big hurdles are oxygenating herself and keeping food & drink down. Once she can do these things, she should be allowed to leave... Fingers crossed this is soon!

We miss her so much 😥 but know she's where she needs to be.

  • 7 January: Pepper is awake!

We just visited Pepper. She's awake and her breathing tube has been removed. She is still on oxygen as she has pneumonia and isn't getting enough on her own. They also had to stitch part of her larynx back to allow her to breathe adequately - but this saved her from a tracheotomy.

She has also got ulcers on her eyes from being unable to blink so she has contact lenses to treat that.

She's still sedated but conscious, to keep her stress levels low. They said she doesn't like to be handled but as soon as we arrived she came and snuggled into us.

She has another 2 to 3 days in the hospital, but at least she's not in an ICU bed anymore. We are making some progress!
