Save Downtown Car Park

Downtown Car Park is being sold by Auckland Council to a developer which intends to demolish it - meaning the loss of more than 1,500 public car parking spaces.

This affects Auckland City businesses, retailers and the greater public and it cannot be rebuilt once it is gone.

The building has for more than 50 years offered a safe and accessible car park for people shopping, working, sight-seeing and using the ferries.

It is particularly important for women, children, seniors and people with disabilities as alternative parking locations are uncertain or at a distance.

The loss of the carpark may mean the death of the CBD - with fewer people going to the city to shop, dine and play and fewer businesses able to survive due to limited parking spaces for workers.

The environmental impact of the demolition and rebuild is also enormous.

Save the Queen Street Society Incorporated knows there are alternative options and has presented one to the Council which would not only retain 1000 public car parks but also net the Council $300 million more than the present sale proposal.

A judicial review at the High Court is taking place on the 5th of August in a bid to fight the sale as it is, but the Society needs your help to see that court action through.
