Blueskin Amenity & Landscape Society has been set up balance the discussion on the Porteous Hill wind turbine proposal
Otago
In May 2016, the DCC heard an application from Blueskin Energy Ltd (BEL) – a company owned by the Blueskin Resilient Community Trust (BRCT) – to build and operate three wind turbines on the top of Porteous Hill. The application was declined by Commissioner Colin Weatherall. Since then, BEL has lodged an appeal with the Environment Court. BEL has also signalled its intention to propose a new, one-turbine option for the same site at the Court hearing next year. THE BLUESKIN AMENITY and LANDSCAPE SOCIETY was set up by local residents opposed to major wind turbine development on Porteous Hill. THE REASONS WE OPPOSE THIS PROPOSAL are
• It does not have community ownership or wide support
• It offers no guaranteed benefits to local residents
• It would damage the beauty of Blueskin Bay and its peace and tranquillity
• A single turbine would be taller than the Mt Cargill
transmission tower. It would be visually dominant and noisy
The funds raised will be used to assist with the legal costs involved with opposing the consent application (for a wind turbine in close proximity to residents) in the Environment Court's upcoming hearing. The funds raised will principally be used for an expert witness.
