Following floods and a cyclone, Kahukuranui atop our Kahungunu Marae is damaged and needs restoration. Save Our Marae! HELP US!
Nūhaka, Hawke's Bay
KAHUNGUNU MARAE in NUHAKA has been hit hard by floods and Cyclone Gabrielle. In the middle of our carvings (whakairo) restoration we have found the TEKOTEKO (statue) atop our marae in need of urgent repair after all our terrible weather.
The tekoteko (statue) at the top of our marae is KAHUKURANUI, first-born of KAHUNGUNU and RONGOMAIWAHINE. In our whakairo (carving) restoration we have found the statue to be more deteriorated than expected, and so are fundraising to SAVE KAHUKURANUI, our beautiful tekoteko atop KAHUNGUNU COMMUNITY MARAE.
We have a shortfall of $30,000 therefore this is our current target for our restoration programme. There is also other work to be completed on the paepae and inside the marae, so any funds raised over our target will go to further restoration work.
Our marae is the heart of our community, and KAHUKURANUI is the symbol of our strength, beauty, whakapapa and mana.
Please help support us and our marae in our whakairo restoration mahi!
Kahungunu Community Marae serves the Ngati Rakaipaaka iwi and Nuhaka village as a Community centre for all, because we are a community marae. Our Committee is made up of six Trustees and seven committee members, plus the assistance of volunteers.
Whakairo (carving) restoration so that Kahukuranui can return and take pride of place atop our marae!
