Eleven Waikato acts are banding together in a bid to ensure the future of a Hamilton entertainment institution.
The Meteor Theatre will be the beneficiary of the two Friday night gigs within its own walls, which are also part of the nationwide New Zealand Music Month series of events.
The shows are the initiative of Mark Tupuhi - the man behind The Hum, the radio station dedicated to broadcasting and promoting Hamilton and Waikato music - the Hamilton Fringe and the Meteor.
The first show on Friday, May 6 features Ghosts Of Electricity, Bridge City Bitche$, The New Millennium Beatniks, Jahna and Rubita.
The Second Show on May 13 will have performances by Imploder, Bruno Merz, Harry Parsons, Aorangi, Super Narco Man and Glass Shards.
Although the Meteor had been going through a halcyon period of much use and a variety of shows and exhibitions since it was gifted by the Hamilton City Council to the One Victoria Trust in early 2014, it's long-term future is far from assured and, like its cross-town cousin Founders Theatre, renovations were sorely needed.
Tupuhi added: "We are fighting to keep the doors of the Meteor open. We face losing our best and most versatile venue - the best black box theatre in the country - if we don't raise enough money to earthquake-proof the building. It is an ongoing campaign and our effort is but a drop in a very deep bucket, but every cent counts."
Further details about the shows and the bands can be heard on The Hum, which is broadcast on 106.7fm, or online at thehum.org.
