Help a New Zealand volunteer referee make it all the way to the Gay Rugby World Cup in Ottawa.
Auckland
The Bingham Cup is the World Cup of gay rugby, and the largest rugby tournament on the planet. In 2020 it will be in Ottawa, Canada - which is a long way from New Zealand. And the tournament doesn't have the funds to bring referees that far.
I'm Jack Remiel, and most of the people I've blown a whistle at will know me as Remy. I'm a full-time student, and have been a volunteer rugby referee for ten years. I give up my Saturdays, get yelled at a lot, and do it because I love rugby. I'm also gay, and am equally passionate about seeing other queer people involved in a sport that offers so much to so many.
What all this means is that I need some assistance making it to Ottawa to be part of the Bingham Cup. The cost of flights and accommodation for the tournament is around $2,600 NZD (depending on the exchange rate) - and that's without an extra bag.
New Zealand is the greatest rugby nation in the world (don't @ me on this) but if I can't make it, NZ won't be supplying any referees to the biggest amateur tournament out there. With 140 teams anticipated - over 3000 players - there's certainly a need to keep plenty of people in line (I'm looking at the Australians here).
So please, help a Kiwi fly 14,475 km to Ottawa to be part of running a fantastic tournament.
Flights and accommodation for the tournament. Any surplus will go to getting an extra bag on the plane. If things don't go to plan, the money will be donated to the NZ Falcons and the International Society of Inclusive Rugby Referees.
A great reason to update this page 14 March 2020
I've changed the goal and the end date for this fundraiser, because an INCREDIBLY generous person who does not wish to be named has paid for my flights.
I am completely unable to thank them for their generosity, because this is one of the few times words are just not enough.
The $500 raised so far will cover my accommodation during the tournament. Any further money raised between now and the end of March will go to helping other referees cover their Bingham Cup costs.
Thank you to everyone.
