Fundraising for shade for Papamoa playgrounds

Papamoa, Bay Of Plenty

Every summer in Pāpāmoa, parents are extremely frustrated by the lack of shade at our local playgrounds.

The equipment can be unusable due to the slides and swings being too hot to touch and the playgrounds offer no protection from the harsh sun. Skin cancer is New Zealand’s most common cancer - over 90% of skin cancers are caused by over-exposure to the ultraviolet radiation (UVR) which is primarily the sun. Dr Bronwen McNoe, a Cancer Society Researcher says that a well-designed shade can reduce the UV exposure of people using the playground by more than 75%.

Only two playgrounds in Pāpāmoa have sunshades, leaving 19 playgrounds that don't. We think our children deserve better!

Two Pāpāmoa mums are working in partnership with The Rotary Club of Pāpāmoa to fundraise for much needed sunshades for our parks. In liaison with Tauranga City Council, we have chosen Gordon Spratt playground for our initial playground with the hopes of raising enough money to hopefully roll out another playground in Pāpāmoa.

The cost for sunshades varies for each park but averages out to around $30,000 each.

We have already received a grant of $8,000 but to have these funds allocated to us we need to match the money.

Please help us to achieve our goal - every dollar will count!
