Palliative and end-of life care, final adventures and (eventually) the celebration of Shona McNeil's life.

  • Update on Shona and Shaun

      1 December 2025

We would like to thank everyone again for their generosity. We were delighted to be able to travel and have some adventures while Shona had the energy to do so. Now our life is much quieter and smaller with Shona taking each day as it comes. We are delighted each day that she wakes and decide what we are going to do based on her available energy that day and her pain levels. Although Shona continues to defy all prognoses, we have set some funds aside for a tiny cremation service in Levin, followed by a much larger and inclusive celebration of Shona's life in Paraparaumu. Shaun has attended some counselling sessions and a course of Pilates. He is trying to lose a bit of weight and has lost 3KG in the past 3 weeks. We thank you for your understanding when Shona has to stay home or cancel things, as her energy and pain levels vary significantly. She has also stopped driving so is dependent on Shaun driving her places or people coming to pick her up. Seeing people takes a huge amount out of her, so we are sorry if you can't get to see her as much as you would like. She does appreciate receiving messages and cards that she can read when she has the energy. With our biggest thanks and regards to you all in New Zealand, Scotland and around the World. S & S.

  • Many thanks to you all

      1 September 2025

With many thanks to you all for your support and contributions the page has now closed. Your generosity has allowed us to tick a few things off of Shona's bucket list, allowed Shaun to be home with Shona in her final months and also to plan and prepare for a private cremation and a livestreamed public memorial service once the time comes (man, these are costly!). We couldn't have managed all of this without your generosity and kindness! Thanks again!

  • South Island Adventure!

      16 July 2025

We had a lovely trip to the Winter Festival in Dunedin. The rain didn't dampen the spectacular lantern and lighting designs. Next we travelled to Oamaru, to experience the Steam Punk capital Museum. It was a fabulous collection of interactive activities, especially the mirror/light room and the big old organ which played well known music extracts. Then we travelled on to the beautiful Lake Tekapo where we had three days of fun including our first ever helicopter trip up to the snow line. We also did some star-gazing at night as it is a dark sky reserve, then we jumped in the hot water pools to warm up. Lastly we visited Queenstown-went up the gondola and down the luge! Arrowtown next and then Shaun celebrated his birthday with a few laps around Highland Park in a Le Mans racing car at 180kms per hour! All in all a great trip off of the bucket list. Thank you so much for your generosity which has allowed us to make these memories together while we can. Shona is glad to have been able to do these tiki tours when she did as she is beginning to notice a decline in her health, low energy levels and an increased need for naps and rest during the day. So there will be less trips away and more focus on what we can do at home when we have the energy to do things. We are so looking forward to attending a wedding in the local forest here on 31st July, so that's the next big event on the horizon. We hope you are all keeping well and happy wherever you are in the world. Thanks again!

  • So grateful to everyone-enjoying ticking things off of the list

Shona and I had a short trip to Uluru (Ayers Rock) and defied expectations by using a Segway to go around the whole base of the rock, including areas we are not permitted to photograph. We ended the week by visiting Melbourne where I got ill and Shona had a fall, but we had a good time exploring a city we hadn't seen before.

Firstly, thank you for all of the contributions. Your generosity has blown us away. It has allowed us to tick the first few things off of the bucket list. The Banksy exhibition, Damien Rice concert for valentines day and our recent visit to the amazing Hudertwasser museum in Whangarei, including a tiki tour in Northland. WOMAD is next. Shona's health has been amazing, largely thanks to the strong painkillers (Oxycodone rules!) and sometimes she even forgets that she has Cancer. She will be starting a blog soon entitled 'I'm not dead yet!' and we will put up a link to that once it is live. Thanks again to you all.
