Sian Scott - Olympics 2020

  • Moving forward

      4 August 2020

    Hi all!

Just letting you know competitions in NZ are starting up again! Central North Island Champs (CNI) next month then Nationals the month after. The NZ Olympic Committee have said that the Tokyo Olympic Committee are committed to the Games going ahead in July to August 2021, so we'll see how the Covid 19 crisis develops over the next 6 months...

I was also interviewed by the very kind and talented Suzanne McFadden of News Room. You can read the piece on here: https://www.newsroom.co.nz/lockerroom/the-karate-kid-who-stood-up-to-her-bullies

Hope you are all well, safe and happy! Have a wonderful day!

    Hello all!

I wish you all well, safe and happy especially at this difficult time around the world regarding Covid-19.

I have been waiting to get you all some more substantial answers so here are the main points:

    - All competition both in NZ and Internationally are cancelled or postponed with no confirmed new dates

    - Tokyo Olympic Games have been rescheduled to July/August 2021 but if this date is not possible come next year, the Games will likely be cancelled

    - I am still hoping the WKF World Championships currently scheduled for November in Dubai goes ahead but this remains to be seen

With regards to the funds so kindly provided by you all so far - Prior to the global Covid-19 outbreak I have used the funds for the following:

    - WKF Premier League and Olympic Games mandatory uniform and protective gear. The new rules outlined that all gi's (Karate uniforms) must have the manufacturer logo embroidered on the shoulders in red and in blue for if you are competing in either colour to match the protective gear and belt. You are also require to have a spare of each colour should you get blood or marks on your uniform from a previous bout fight. (be a shame to be disqualified for not having a spare clean gi!). Also all gear must be the latest WKF approved items. Therefore I have purchased the following compulsory items:

    - x2 gi's with red embroidery

    - x2 gi's with blue embroidery

    - a belt in red and in blue

    - a pair of gloves in red and in blue

    - a pair of shin and foot pads in red and in blue

    - a body protector

    - a women's chest protector

This was purchased from Shureido and came to a total of $2234.94

    - Return flights to Sydney for the Australian Open, which has now been postponed, came to a total of $461.93. This is currently in credit with the airline until next year which I hope to still use for the competition

Which brings the current total spent to $2696.87

Leaving a remainder of $2103.13 Which hopefully will be used towards return flights and accommodation in Dubai for the World Championships but I will keep you updated.

Thank you everyone, again I can't say this enough, for your belief and support. This is such a humbling experience!

Warm wishes to all of you and your families!

    Hi all!

I passed my ACL functional testing (clears me to return to competitive sport training) on Monday 16th December 2019 - eight months post-op which is 1.5 months earlier than normal. Which means more time for Karate training! That being said, moving forward I will need to maintain strength training and lots of hopping among other things to maintain the integrity of my ACL grafts.

    Targets for next year are:

    - Olympic Qualification

    - Oceania Karate Championships

    - World Karate Championships

I have made it on to the long list for Olympic Qualification mid next year - a chance I thought I had most likely lost once my second ACL rupture was confirmed. I am elated to have this chance again!

Will update as and when I qualify at/for these events.

Otherwise, you can follow my training through social media:

Thank you, as always, from the bottom of my heart for all your kind support financially and belief in me <3 Hope you all have the happiest of holidays and enjoy your break!

  • Another bump in the road... A new challenge

      4 April 2019

It's been a while since I updated you all, but you probably know by now that I like to wait to have big things to report!

To recap, I had reconstructive knee surgery on my left knee in February 2018 as I had fully ruptured my anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) which is essential in stabilising the knee in dynamic sports like Karate. I did the rehab to the letter and passed my return to sport testing 9 months later (3 months earlier than normally expected). 1 year on from surgery, I successfully made it back on to the NZ Team and was set to compete at this year's Oceania Championships (http://www.karatenz.co.nz/News/News/2019/03/Senior-Oceania-2019---Team-Announcement/?fbclid=IwAR3hd4B7w8C6eYcZq0z4WpJct808H0-4zXHzR6ZFgXP3tlBUbzNp15zSUE0). Training was going well, I was moving better and felt so positive about where I was headed.

Sadly I have suffered another injury and it seems my body is aching to be symmetrical again as I have now ruptured my right ACL and torn the meniscus (cartilage). Surgery is the only option so I'm about to go through it all again. This means I should be back and able by Oceania 2020 but Olympic qualification is looking..... less than likely :P

In all honesty, I was heart broken when I got the news that the injury was likely my ACL. Mostly because I was confused as to what I could have done differently - as soon as I suffered an injury I recovered as I should and upon returning to training I would work within no-pain boundaries to build up again. I was (am still) seeing a physio, chiropractor and sports massage therapist throughout..... so many factors. But I worked past it, I know what I must do to get back on track. Surgery will be next week then bring on the rehab.

Looking forward, the WKF Senior World Championships has been the pinnacle of sport Karate up until only recently and would still be the achievement of a lifetime to win. Therefore I have my eyes on the World Champs in 2020.

I know all you wonderful people who supported me were gunning for me to go to the Olympics and I am so sorry if I have disappointed you. Especially those that have invested in me financially, I am truly gutted.

Cards on the table, I am serious about recovering and I will be going for Senior World's in 2020 so was intending to keep the funds in savings until it could be used for competition next year. HOWEVER it is not my money and if anyone who made donations would like their donations back, I will understand completely. Please email me: scott.sian@gmail.com

I wish all the very best of luck to our Kiwi's still going to Oceania in Sydney next week. Work together, train hard, give it your all and keep your head up. Kia Kaha 💛

  • UPDATE 10 Months Post-Op!

      29 November 2018

Normally it takes a year of rehabilitative training following ACL reconstructive surgery to return to sport safely. I am truly proud to say that I passed my return to sport test 8 months after my operation. I have officially been signed off by my physio and have been training back to normal for several months now.

Every fortnight I notice a significant improvement in endurance and performance with my knee and pain lessening too. I am back to training twice a day most days and am itching to compete in the new year.

As this is a long road to the Olympics in 2020, your support to help me travel to the necessary tournaments that qualify for world ranking is invaluable. I cannot thank you all enough for the generous funds you have all donated so far.

Although this injury was of course not part of the plan, I am more determined than ever to achieve my goal. Having surpassed expectations from all the surgical and rehabilitative experts that I have had the great fortune to have working with me, I know that I can do this.

Please check out my Facebook page for the latest video update on my rehab training and the final closure of this chapter. Back on to competition. Bring it on.

I am in to week 6 post-op rehabilitation (left knee ACL rupture in Nov 2019 - knee reconstructive surgery in Feb 2018).

Using my sport science degree and my experience in exercise rehabilitation while being under the great care of the expert team of professionals looking after me (my surgeon, physiotherapist, chiropractor & sports massage therapist) and supportive family and friends, I am elated to say that recovery is going fantastically.

Please find me on Facebook for visual updates on my recovery: https://www.facebook.com/trainersian.scott

Also, I am incredibly grateful to say that with the money raised and saved so far (which is sitting untouched!) has my next 2 major overseas tournaments paid for (K1 in Tokyo October & Senior World Champs in Madrid November 2018 - with doctor's approval).

Everyday I hope all you amazing supporters have some wonderful things in life headed your way. Your generosity will not be forgotten.
