Smidge needs Tests and Surgery at Massey

  • Pill pockets

So far Smidge's medication is going well.

The vets advised that it would take a few weeks for the antiseizure medication to build up in his system and so he might still have another seizure since he was due for one.

Which he did have another one a few days ago. Hoping the medication will get them down to no more than 1 or 2 per year now.

He still has another 10 days or so of his other meds for his liver before we can get another blood test to see if the antibiotics fixed it or if we are facing a liver biopsy. *fingers crossed*

I was struggling to get his pills into him the first couple of days until I realized that since he was now back on his regular food I could hide the pills in something. The lamb treats turned out to make the perfect pill pockets!. I will attach a picture. 😊

  • Current test results

      12 March 2020

We took Smidge up to Massy vet hospital on Monday the 9th of March. He was admitted for testing. They repeated the initial tests my own vet did to see if they got the same results. They discovered that his liver had actually got a bit worse but they didn't think that it was not connected to his seazures. It appears he has two seperate conditions.

They have diagnosed him with epilepsy and prescribed anti seizure medication which he will likely be on for the rest of his life.

To try to diagnose what is wrong with his liver the gave him a C.T scan on day two. They did not find any of the serious issues they were concerned about like veins bypassing his Kidneys. However the full report on the scan has not come back yet. As a first step to treat his Liver they have prescribed him a three week course of antibiotics and some liver support medicine to treat infections like bacteria or a virus they may be in his liver. He will be going to my own vet in 3 weeks so they can do a blood test and see if his liver has improved. If it hasn't then he will need a liver biopsy which is very a full surgical procedure. So I am really hoping the antibiotics work.

I will post more when I know more.

The team at Massey were amazing and took very good care of him.

As I have saved and sold some things to come up with some of the money, I have lowered the total target. ♡

  • Date for tests

Massy University has given us a date for his tests on the 9th of March.

I have been saving everything I can towards this cost and selling whatever I can. As well as the very generous donations from everyone I am only $1000 short to cover the tests to determine if his liver condition can be corrected by surgery. If anyone has not posted or shared the Link to his give a little page could you please do that for me. Thanks everyone! Your ongoing encouragement and generosity has been amazing. ♡☆♡

  • Another Seizure

      9 February 2020

Unfortunately Smidge had another seizure in the night . Although it has been 2 and a half weeks since his last one thanks to his new diet, it seems we can not completely eliminate the seizures through diet control and laxatives.

The urgency to get him up to Massy for tests to determine the exact cause of his liver problem has now increased. I will be putting aside every spare cent I have and doing as much promoting for his give a little page as I can. :(

Poor pup. It is so hard to see him having a seizure and not being able to do anything to help him.

Well Smidges fresh food diet is working out awesome. He hasn"t had another seizure for 2 weeks. He is super excited about his dinner time now as well, spinning in circles while I heat it up in the microwave. Lol.

So we should be able to keep his toxins down to a safer level until we can get him up to Massy University for treatment.

Thanks to everyone for your generosity and support and to Bronwen for giving me the food recipie. ♡

That's so awesome! I'm so glad it is working out for him. If you're ever out Upper Hutt way I'm sure my Patch would love to have a play with Smidge :)

  • New Diet

Well the prescription diet from the vets wasn't helping him and he was getting depressed from eating nothing but buiscuits. Then a lovely lady saw one of my posts and told me that her previous dog had also had a liver problem and that he did much better from eating fresh food. Less processed. She gave me a recipie that my vet had once suggest when Smidge had an upset tummy.

Fresh cooked chicken (shredded) mixed with white rice, mixed veges and some scrambled eggs. So I made up enough for 6 meals and he is super excited by the new diet. It is all his favourite things in one meal. He thinks he is king of the world again and not depressed anymore. So I think this should be a much better way to try to keep his protein down and manage his condition until we can get him in for final tests. :)
