Mental health events for the youth of Nelson

Nelson

We are a Student Business Group from Nelson College for boys who are also partaking in the Lion Foundation Young enterprise Scheme. Our names are Jack Franklin, Austin Candlish, and Oliver Martin. We call ourselves Speak It Up.

Our mission is to raise awareness about mental health and provide encouragement and information to the broader community of Nelson so that talking about mental health is more normalised. We realise the reality is that a lot of mental health problems go unnoticed and unspoken, ultimately worsening one's mental wellbeing. This culture needs to be changed so that individuals who feel "invisible" can be addressed and feel comfortable speaking to people they can trust.

We are focusing on how to ask for help and how to give someone help, and we want to tackle the culture of not asking for help that is common in youth which can result in mental health problems remaining unspoken and therefore unnoticed by others. We are excited to have organised Nigel Latta to come to Nelson College and Speak to the Community.
