Hiya from Paula, Ryan and Kieran. We just wanted to say thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all your love and support over the last 5 months.

We are eternally grateful. We truly love and appreciate every single one of you.

This profile photo is us at Mike's sisters wedding on Saturday 10 October. I had Mike's best man tie made into a corsage. We kept our pinky promise to Mike and made his sister smile on her big day.

    Big love from

    The Stenos

  • My final update...

      27 September 2015

First off, apologies for not writing any further updates sooner, but this update I’ve been putting off for a little while now and I’m sure you will appreciate why once you read it. This one will be tough to write but there’s no more time to keep putting it off. Those of you that are family and close friends will know by now my current circumstances and it’s now time to let everyone know.

On advice from our doctors, we have stopped all treatments and moved to the palliative phase of care, which simply means we are making myself as pain free and comfortable as possible as we wait for death. The cancer was just far more aggressive than they first thought and chemo was not having the necessary affect. The impact on my liver is the main issue that meant there was nothing further we could do.

Therefore, I’ve been given a few short weeks to live, of which I’ve already survived through 17 days. The North Shore Hospice are providing us with outstanding support and the plan is to remain at home if possible. This has obviously been devastating for Paula, the boys and everyone close to me as we all expected to gain a lot more time through treatment but with chemo not working and several complications occurring, including a blood clot in my leg leading to pulmonary embolisms, our time is now up.

So then, I sign off by saying I love each and every one of you and appreciate the support you all have provided. The donations through this page have been incredibly generous and have made a massive impact but really it’s not about the money, it’s simply knowing that this shear number of people care about you. I wish you all the best of health and happiness for the future.

    Life goes on. Steno

  • Latest update from Mike...

Here again at Auckland Hospital getting chemo treatment number 5. The nurses here are amazing and today I'm lucky to have the wonderful Maria. Cycle 4 was a little bit tougher than the first three. A lot more nausea and some pain, but I was quite active and so was probably "paying" for that a bit.

We managed a trip down to Te Awamutu to see my Nana and tell her what was happening as we'd not had chance to see her face to face. We took the boys out to Dennys for breakfast and then to see the Minions movie, then mini golf and then lunch. The boys had a great time but I was worn out. I then attended the East Coast Bays luncheon thanks to Bruce Wigglesworth. Very fancy set up this year, a good feed and some very entertaining guest speakers. Thanks to Bid and the Bays old boys, there was some raffles organinsed that amazingly raised $2100 for our Give A Little fund. Thanks to the following sponsors of the raffles, Louise Simpson Hair Salon, Unichem Chemist Albany, Hillcrest Promotions and Sky City. Please support these guys when you can! They also have sourced a signed jersey from the All Blacks which is on TradeMe (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=917423594) and the money will also go to our fund. Thanks so much East Coast Bays Rugby Club.

The boys rugby is going well. They are on a roll with wins against Northcote and Helensville. This week we are at Windsor Park at 10:40 against our friends in the Green team. After that, we head off with the Rep team to Tauranga to play our first Rep game (friendly, warm up). We've been training hard and look like we have a great team this year. The boys are billeted out overnight and we play Sunday. I have some great memories of rugby away trips and being billeted out. You always had your fingers crossed for the rich family who would take you to McDonald's, LOL! Our first competition Rep game is the quarterfinals on 2 Aug (my birthday!).

Next week I have mine and Kieran's birthday to look forward to. I'll let you know all about this and how cycle 5 has gone soon. Thank you to everyone for your continued support.

Great update bro, thanks! Try and chill a bit this time.

      Nice work Brucey :-)

Mike - that's so funny about getting billeted out, I used to think the same thing when getting billeted out for gymnastics. Although, I do remember in Tauranga there were not enough parents to billet all the kids and I got left out - like the last child with no home to go to! I had to stay in a hotel room with my gym coach and her entire family! It was kinda strange.

Looking forward to Kieran and your birthdays.

      I'm so proud of you.

      Love ya lots.

  • Update from Mike...

Hi everyone. I'm writing this update from the hospital as I get my third chemo treatment. The second chemo went ok. I got a few more side affects this time but my "low" wasn't as long or dramatic as the first cycle. We also had some fun events to make things a bit easier. It was Paula's birthday on Sunday so thanks to Andrea, Phil and Jo, we got to stay Saturday night at the Langham hotel. We had a great time and were upgraded to the Club Room. Valet parking and a great dinner at the Eight restaurant. I even had 3 glasses of champagne! On Sunday we had lunch at Shane's restaurant Applejack, for Paula and George's birthday. George is Phil and Jo's youngest who was born on Paula's birthday. George and Paula have a special bond. It was a great afternoon and the food was awesome. I managed to chow down the pork belly and kumara mash. I'm continuing to face challenges and still have very low energy reserves but have plenty of support and just taking one day at a time. I'm also enjoying coaching very much. Unfortunately we have had two losses but we have another big game this Saturday at Windsor Park, 10:40. Once again, thanks to everyone for your donations and messages of support.

So glad you liked the pork belly at AJs, was lovely having everyone out there.

      Hey Brother

This pic proves it to me that you’re an inspiration to us all! Was great to come and chat with you, Benny and Cedes the other day during chemo, and then see you at Bays on Saturday arvo, share some yarns and a couple laughs. Keep the positives mate! Your friends and family are with you all the way. Kia kaha. Go Bays, Go Steno

    Hi everyone,

It’s been 9 days since my first chemo and so I’m feeling fairly good as I come to the “up” part of my cycle heading into the next cycle. My pain is well under control with a ton of morphine but unfortunately that comes with a bunch of very unpleasant side effects. I still have issues with fatigue, weakness, stomach problems and some nausea, but I’m getting through day by day.

My situation is now pretty much public knowledge as we have got to that point where it was time to tell everyone we hadn’t told yet and put it on Facebook. All the amazing messages of support really are helping and it’s been over whelming to know just how many people care. My beautiful wife continues to provide amazing support but also needs all you love and support.

We have another big game at home tomorrow for the boys. ECB J3 Black vs Nth Shore Blue, Windsor Park 3, 10:40am. All supporters appreciated.

Thanks you all so much again for the ongoing support.

    Cheers, Steno
