Once in a lifetime opportunity to be part of Massey's Study Tour in my last year of my Bachelor Degree in Sociology and Social Policy.
Hawke's Bay
Currently in her final year of a Bachelor of Arts with Majors in both Sociology and Social Policy, Rohana Sergent has been provided with the opportunity to complete her degree with a study tour to India.
The tour which starts 26th November 2017, is being offered by Massey University as a ‘Special Topic’ with limited spaces. Rohana has been fortunate enough to have been selected. The selected students will travel to South India, including Bangalore and Mysore where they will explore sustainability, responsibility, and social enterprise. These are important global topics and Rohana knows the experiential learning gained will provide a better, deeper understanding which she can bring back to New Zealand and apply in her own context.
Rohana felt drawn to this experience in 2015 as a first-year student, believing this tour to India was her calling. Rohana feels passionately that the broader cultural awareness and appreciation she will gain will help her become a better global citizen in this diverse, and fast changing world. In an increasingly globalised world she feels the importance now more than ever to be more diversely connected and to have a better understanding and appreciation for others globally, so that we can become more adaptable, responsive, and engaged citizens. Rohana predicts the tour will help her to not only grow personally, but also in her studies moving forward with her plan to return to India to undertake research towards her Masters.
What stands in the way now, is funding. As a mature student raising a family, there is always that financial burden of increasing debt. Rohana has been actively raising funds and has set up a ‘Give a Little’ page.

This study tour is to provide participants with experiential learning on contemporary Asia with a focus on three key themes: sustainability, responsibility and social enterprise. The itinerary of the study tour will follow a series of ‘stories’ that will be used to explore the course themes: (1) social responsibility, (2) sustainable livelihoods and (3) social enterprise. The study tour will include site visits and engagement with a diverse range of local actors.
