"There's no point having food safety regulation if it impedes our ability to make affordable food"
On Thursday, 8 May, I travelled to Wellington to give an oral presentation on my campaign to parliament. NZ Food Safety and the Ministry of Regulation both attended. The recording is available at https://vimeo.com/showcase/10758263?video=1074160461
I'm asking for donations of any amount towards my costs associated with this trip (from Nelson) - and my ongoing work.
For over a year I have been campaigning for changes to food safety regulation (including opposing the new Food Act Levy) that discriminates against small and micro (self-employed owner/operator) food businesses for being small. Currently, small food businesses are paying more than their fair share for a regulatory system predominantly designed to enable free trade agreements with other countries (the US in particular) so that our food exporters can turn big profits.
I have devoted countless hours and energy to running a petition, writing submissions, engaging with key stakeholders, and keeping food businesses updated with my progress without being paid for any of it. Why? Because I want to see small food businesses thriving. They bring life, soul and joy to our local spaces and places; they provide high quality food at a reasonable price; they provide flexible employment opportunities; and they support the events and markets that make our places special and unique.
Money raised will be spent on costs associated with travelling to and staying in Wellington to give my presentation. If enough is raised, the funds will go towards a second person attending to give extra representation of small food businesses.
Changes are coming 11 July 2025
I've been having monthly meetings with New Zealand Food Safety (NZFS) - the business unit of MPI that administers the Food Act 2014 and associated food safety regulation. The Minister of Food Safety, Hon Andrew Hoggard, has directed them to make some big changes, which they have been working on with my support.
Watch this space as there could be some big changes coming soon!
