Support for Andy & Lou

Update 5 weeks today since our lives were turned upside down.

Who would have thought at the 8 day mark we were all pretty sure Andy would be awake for Christmas. Unfortunately that didn’t happen, nor was he awake to see the start of a new year. In fact that sleep lasted a whole month.

Finally last Monday they turned off the sedation and over the last week Andy has been waking up from his drug induced coma. Four surgeries later. So many complications along the way. Flailed and heartbreaking attempts at taking the ventilator away have resulted in a tracheotomy. A drug reaction resulted in an astronomical level of muscle breakdown enzyme in his blood that has resulted to kidney malfunction and that’s resulted in dialysis

Andy is awake now. Mentally he is fine. He is not able to move much due to location of tubes for dialysis that enter through his groin. He can’t speak due to the trachy and of course can’t eat or drink.

His muscles have weakened to the point it took 8 staff to get him to sit on the side of the bed for approx 3 minutes.

As his kidneys start to function he will have more time off the machine and therefore be able to do more physio to gain strength back

He will stay in icu until he no longer is reliant on the ventilation through his trachy and his kidneys no longer require dialysis

Then he will be moved to a ward and possibly his shoulder will require surgery for the break and then all going well he will move out to Burwood hospital to undergo full on physical therapy and pretty much learn how to do everything again

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your very kind donations

This is going to be a long toad I actually have no idea quite how long. I’m learning to just be patient and try to take each day as it comes.

From the bottom of my heart the children and I thank you on behalf of Andy who we know is going to really struggle with accepting this xox
