Support for Carlene and Mark from Karekare in the wake of Cyclone Gabrielle, as their entire community faces ongoing uncertainty.
Karekare, Auckland
Cyclone Gabrielle did tremendous damage to Carlene and Mark’s entire community of Karekare. And while their house is still standing, they are currently left homeless. Since the storm they have at times been stranded, unable to get in or out and without power and water. As it is right now, their house is not liveable, and the entire community waits to see what will happen with instability in the land around them.
Carlene and Mark desperately need a new home for themselves and their much loved ponies, cats and dogs. They need to replace many of the things that they cannot get out of their home.
If you know Carlene, you know that she is the heart of any community she is a part of. Between pouring into her home community of many years, Karekare; her decades of contribution in the local Steiner community, especially supporting new mums and young ones; and her generous support of anyone in need, Carlene has held so many of us up when we needed it most.
And we would love to do the same for Carlene and Mark, now, when they need it most.
Anything you can offer is welcome, as we know so many are struggling. Every little bit makes a difference, more than many of us may ever know.
We will keep you updated on how things go for them, as they find out more about the stability of the land around there. If you would like to reach out and offer other assistance, to Carlene or the greater Karekare community, please contact her daughter, Danielle at dave.dani@xtra.co.nz

Immediate expenses as they find a new place to live, gather essentials and furnishings, find homes for their animals and face the uncertainty of their home and community continually threatened by land slides.
Transparency around Insurance 6 March 2023
As we know, Give A Little do a great job of for asking for transparency, and honouring that, I just wanted to do a little update here. Any insurance Carlene and Mark may have is irrelevant in this situation. Their house is still there and intact, so there is no insurance pay out. But it is unliveable for who knows how long, likely a long time. So they are faced with continuing to pay mortgage, fees, etc on a home they cannot live in, while they find another place to live.
I hope this helps with anyone who needs more clarity, we can understand that, with so many impacted around NZ. And we are so grateful for the outpouring of support and love toward Carlene and Mark. It is so SO felt right now 💗
