Raising funds for 2 amazing volunteer organisations, one makes food for soldiers, the other meets and helps evacuees from front line towns.

In April 2025 I travelled to Lviv in Ukraine to volunteer. I had been following the situation in Ukraine every day since February 2022 and I very much wanted to help.
The Lviv Volunteer Kitchen was started in 2014 when Russia invaded Crimea, by two woman who wanted to make sure soldiers defending Ukraine could get food that tastes like 'home' and to create a place where local and international volunteers could come together to do something practical to support the soldiers. They create approximately 40,000 servings a week in dehydrated food packs that are sent directly to the front line.
In 2022 when the full scale invasion of Ukraine began, displacing people from front line villages and towns, two young people in Lviv started the NGO PTAHA (small bird), a volunteer organisation based at the main railway station where they receive evacuees. In 2025 the teams still meet 2 trains a day to help refugees from the front line with their luggage, shuttle them to temporary accommodation and help them get established in Lviv or move on into Europe and beyond. They have supported 800,000 people since Feb 2024.
Both of these organisations are run entirely by volunteers and funded only via donations. When I left to come home to NZ, I asked them what people in NZ could do to help - they said, 'just make sure they don't forget us'. This fund raiser is my way of making sure we can do more than remember Ukrainians, we can send them funds that speak to how much we care.
I volunteered for both organisations in a trip to Ukraine in April/May of 2025. I was impressed by how much they could deliver on donated goods and money, but they are always short of funds and are never sure where the next donation will come from.
Any funds raised will be split evenly between Lviv Volunteer Kitchen and PTAHA. They will use the money to help keep the organsations functioning as neither receive any formal funding and can only do what they do with support from donations.
We made it !!! 31 July 2025
Wow, thanks so, so ,so much to everyone who has donated to this fundraiser - it has been humbling watching the donations come in and I am so excited to be able to share this with the teams at the Lviv Volunteer Kitchen and PTAHA at the railway station.
They will be blown away that such a small community could raise so much.
Givealittle don't pay out the funds until between the 20th and the 25th of the month after a fundraiser closes, so I will be sending the money in the last week of August. If there is still a function open to send updates, I will share the reaction of the LVK and PTAHA once they have received the money. It may well be spent on power bills, gas for their vans (they only have 1 van each) and other operational costs but your efforts will keep each organisation going for a few more months and most important of all you have reminded them that they are not forgotten.
