Supporting Greg’s daughters and helping keep Gokula Music going after his sudden passing.

Newmarket, Auckland

Recently, Greg Masson, owner of Gokula Music, passed away peacefully in his sleep. Those who visited Gokula know how generous Greg was with his time and his love of unique music equipment / guitars. Gokula was more than a music shop. It was a magnet for creatives / music nerds from all over Aotearoa and the world, with an incredible community built around it.

Kevin has been a huge part of Gokula too, and anyone who knows the shop knows that.

Although Greg’s passing was peaceful, it was sudden. Greg is survived by his 2 daughters, Renee and Ayla, who now have to take on the financial responsibility of a second hand music shop.

The girls are covering Gokula Music’s expenses out of their own pockets while they sort out the shop and their Dad’s financial situation. These costs include staff wages, utilities, insurance and other bills needed to keep the shop running. They shouldn’t have to cover these costs themselves while dealing with the sudden loss of their Dad.

Greg ran a second hand music shop because he loved it, not because there was much money in it.

I set up this Givealittle because Gokula was amazing to me and was just what Tāmaki Makaurau needed. Greg created something special. Ideally we can keep the shop open! We need to make sure Renee and Ayla aren’t financially affected by the sudden passing of their Dad.

Anything you can give will help with immediate costs and give them some breathing room while they work out what happens next.

Arohanui.

Very sad news, on the few occasions I went there to peruse and purchase CDs/records (they are the only things I can play), he was always so eager to tell you about them. Hope his daughters can keep Gokula going.

Really sorry to hear this news. Greg was very kind and welcoming every time my guitar-obsessed son came into Gokula. Greg sold him his first electric guitar and amp earlier this year and then when we had trouble with the cable he very kindly delivered a replacement the next day as we didn't have transport, which was absolutely going above and beyond. My son visited another time and was again made to feel very welcome and spent many hours in there trying out guitars and pedals. It was such a welcoming and supportive environment for a young teenager who loves music. I hope the shop can continue in some way - my son always said he would buy all his guitars from Gokula. Wishing you all the best with navigating this.
