Nicksham had his 10th birthday undergoing his first surgery at Auckland's Starship Children's Hospital and he and his family need our help.
Bay of Plenty
Just before Covid lock down Niksham's mum knew something wasn't right with her boy. Trying to get a quick diagnosis during lockdown was nearly impossible. At Level 3, Nicksham finally had surgery that revealed his parent's worst fears for their only child ... he had non Hodgkin lymphoma.
Nicky and Kajal (mum and dad) were quick to call me (I am Nicksham's teacher) the night they found out. They had no family living in New Zealand and I am pleased they reached out. Covid has isolated so many families and this family is no exception.
Nicksham's mum has had to quit her job at a local tourist accommodation site and Nicklesh has had to take time off work to drive his family to and from appointments for chemo treatments at Starship Children's Hospital. And as if that isn't hard enough, they have a language barrier that makes everything just that much more difficult .
They have an amazing team of nurses and doctors who support them as they come to grips with every aspect of this terrible disease. But the financial stresses mean that Dad cannot stay with his family when they are in Auckland for treatment.
I am hoping we can make a small difference for this very sweet, loving family. Everyone who meets them is blown away by their gentleness and Nicksham's courage and bravery. Nicksham started this long journey on his 10th birthday and it wasn't until the next day that the staff at Starship found out.
Please help me help them.
Niksham is a Year 5 student and I am his teacher. His mum and dad have no family living in New Zealand to help support them at this difficult time. I decided that I needed to do something to help and support them.
All money donated will help support the family as they struggle financially trying to make pay all the household bills. If donations exceed what they need I hope they can fly in a family member from Fiji to help support them in NZ.
