Facing costly treatments for advanced cancer, I’m seeking support to ease the financial burden on my family. Any help is really appreciated
Auckland
In January, my life was turned upside down with a diagnosis of advanced stage 4 bowel cancer. Tests revealed it has spread to my peritoneum and carries the aggressive BRAF gene mutation, leading to a terminal diagnosis.
Life-saving surgery followed and I am currently receiving palliative chemotherapy and responding well so far. However, the upcoming financial burden is a major concern.
My treatment includes chemotherapy alongside Avastin, costing $2,500 every fortnight. The next phase involves the targeted drug combination of Cetuximab and Encorafenib, essential for stabilizing the BRAF mutation.
Although recent new funding for cancer drugs is a positive step, it disappointingly excludes me. As Encorafenib isn’t funded, I can’t receive Cetuximab, taking one without the other is ineffective. Consequently, I have to pursue these drugs privately, which costs $140K for the first six months and $75K each subsequent six-months. My insurance doesn't fully cover these drugs, the financial burden will fall on us.
Asking for help is difficult, but Ellie and my focus is to preserve as much time as possible together as a family. The emotional toll has been devastating, especially on our children, Emily (8) and Max (6).
We’re reaching out to ease the financial strain of living with cancer. Any contribution is greatly appreciated and will allow us to focus on spending quality time together.
The funds will go towards the cost of drug and treatment for my Advanced Cancer with BRAF mutation, Cetuximab and Encorafenib. The aim to spend more time with Emily Max and Ellie.
A big step forward 28 April 2026
Hi everyone - quick update.
Today is my first day back at work.
Honestly, there was a time I didn’t think I’d end up here, so it feels like a pretty big milestone. I wouldn’t be here without all your support.
The treatments, the time, and the chance to get back to this point — that’s all been made possible because of the generosity from this page.
Just wanted to say thanks again to everyone who’s donated, messaged, or checked in. It really does make a difference.
Appreciate it heaps.
Cheers,
David
