Supporting Bari During His Leukaemia Treatment

After a hugely successful dance fundraiser for Bari on 25 July, we wanted to bring you another update.

After a short waiting phase to let his body and immune system partially recover, Bari is now undergoing further rounds of chemotherapy. His first bone marrow test result is looking good for this stage of treatment, but as Bari has put it, “the fight is not over yet.” There are likely several more rounds of treatment ahead, with at least another four months of chemotherapy and hospitalisation expected at this stage. Beyond that, the path forward is still uncertain.

The type of chemotherapy he is undergoing leaves him very tired and has numerous side effects, which are being carefully managed by his medical team. The focus remains on allowing him to rest, and he will be immunocompromised for quite some time yet. But we also want you to know he is staying positive, and he is still his cheeky self during the times he has more energy.

  • 💛 Update – 23 July 2026

      23 July 2026

Firstly, Bari wanted us to pass on just how grateful he is for the incredible support he has received over the past few weeks.

Since our last update, Bari has completed his first round of chemotherapy and is now in a short waiting phase before the next round begins. His blood counts and immune system are recovering, and he is currently waiting for the results of a recent bone marrow biopsy, which will help guide the next stage of his treatment. Right now, the focus is on allowing his body time to recover before the next round of chemotherapy begins.

It’s been incredibly heartwarming to see the overwhelming support for Bari from all walks of life come together—from friends and family, to dance communities around New Zealand. This weekend, the Wellington dance community will be holding a fundraising event, with all proceeds going directly towards supporting Bari and his family.

Bari is currently in the “waiting” phase of treatment, with the focus on managing the side effects of treatment while his bone marrow and immune system recover.

He remains very immunocompromised, so he is not up to hospital visitors or messages just yet. Despite the challenges, he is staying positive and optimistic.

We are incredibly grateful for all the support, generosity and kind messages he has received through Givealittle, the Dança pages, and from people both here in New Zealand and overseas.

Thank you for continuing to respect Bari’s privacy and need for rest while he focuses on treatment and recovery.

  • One Week Update ❤️

      2 July 2026

In just one week, 140 people have donated, raising over $11,700 for Bari. Along with the many messages, shares and offers to help, the support from New Zealand and around the world has been truly overwhelming.

Bari has finished his first week of intensive IV chemotherapy and is now continuing treatment with chemotherapy tablets. There is still a long road ahead, and he has not had much energy these past few days, but he is doing well and has been very grateful for all the support.

He remains immunocompromised and will be for some time, so he is still not ready for visitors. Thank you to everyone who has respected his need for space and shared their encouragement through Givealittle and the Dança page instead. It means a lot. 🧡

We’ve also heard from many people wanting to help in other ways. We’re planning a special fundraiser for the dance community in a few weeks’ time, once Bari is through this early phase of treatment. More details will come soon, and we’d love your help closer to the time.

Thank you again for your kindness, generosity and patience.

    ❤️ Alex & Adrienne
