Supporting the wife and daughter of Narayan Baniya, our Nepal guide still missing after the August flooding. Every bit helps. 🙏

On 26/08/26 catastrophic flooding hit the Nepal-Tibet border region, sweeping away trekkers and guides on the route to Kailash Mansarovar. Among those still missing is Narayan Baniya, our friend and guide with Himalayan Recreation Treks & Expedition, the company we've worked with for many years running treks in Nepal.

I've always described Narayan as having the biggest smile in the room. He was endlessly interested in what we were doing back in New Zealand, and over the years many messages and photos passed between us during the off-season. We'd even invited him to come and visit us and hoped that that day would come soon.

This page is specifically to support Narayan's wife Paru, and daughter — for their immediate needs now, and toward his daughter's long-term security and education.

I'll be travelling to Nepal in October once more leading groups to Everest and Annapurna and will personally meet with Narayan's family. Bishnu Thapa, founder of Himalayan Recreation and Narayan's employer, is helping coordinate support for the family directly and can vouch for how funds will be used.

Narayan Baniya was our trusted guide and friend in Nepal for many years, leading treks with warmth and skill — we're organising this fundraiser to support his wife and daughter after his loss in the August floods.

Use of funds

All funds raised will go toward securing the long-term education of Narayan's six-year-old daughter — school fees, supplies, and support through to university — so she has the future her father would have wanted for her.
