Supporting the Family of Missing Teen Daniel Kelly

  • Thanking everyone who attended Daniel's Memorial service

      18 December 2023

A warm thanks to everyone who attended and helped organise this important day for Daniel and the family. This was a much needed event to help with the healing and recovery of everyone involved, especially Andrea, Max and Tony. This time of year is always difficult for those who have lost loved ones and we hope everyone gets through safely with goodwill, kindness and love.

We are looking forward to the love and support tomorrow as we celebrate and honour Daniel's life and the beautiful memories of him.

Daniel's favourite colour was orange so feel free to add a touch of orange to your outfit if you'd like.

At the end of the memorial there will be refreshments available. After the service we will head out to a local establishment, Papamo's, for a drink and some time together.

Whether you're able to attend the service with us tomorrow, or whether you will be supporting up from afar, we want you to know how much we appreciate the love and kindness shown to us. Thank you, arohanui 💗

It would be accurate to describe the last 6 months as a living nightmare. The Coroner is now ready to send the outcome of their inquiry, so we are now organising a Memorial Funeral to celebrate Daniel's life.

***The Memorial will be at Legacy Funerals Papamoa, 53 TeOkuroa Drive, on Saturday 18 November. Arrival from 1pm, service starting at 1.30pm. All welcome to come join us in sharing the love that Daniel gave to us***

Please set the date aside, and contact us if you'd like more information.

Things have been very difficult since coming home. I haven't known how to update you all, I can't find the words. There's been some devastating effects that we are dealing with, and to be honest, that I'm struggling with. We are all receiving support from external agencies. I don't know what else to say, but thank you for your love.

Painfully, we have had to wait for the whole process, through police and the Coroner, before we can access financial help for Daniel's Memorial Service. That should be coming to a close soon, so I'm really hoping we can have the service soon too.

Hi guys. I'm out on the water three or four times a month and although it's mostly in the Manukau harbour while training, I keep an eye out for Daniel. Same when I'm down at the beach. Daniel is still in our thoughts and so are you.

      Mark and the boys.

The ocean still has our Daniel, and we don't know if we will get him back.

We want to say thank you to you all, for your generosity. Due to your donations, over the last 6weeks, we have been able to fund things such as air searches, accommodation in Waiuku, Awhitu Peninsula, Port Waikato and Laingholm as we the searched coastlines daily for weeks, along with petrol, the ebikes hireage to get further up and down the coastlines, flowers, car fixing, food and to access support services to help us come to terms with our loss.

There are regular searches still occurring via air and foot, but not as often.

We have started talking about a memorial service but we don't have details for that yet. We would also like to get a memorial stone and plaque for remembrance of Daniel.

The owner of the land right where Daniel was last seen, has very generously offered for us to have this memorial placed on his land near the beach.

We are so very thankful to everybody for your love and support as we navigate this incredibly painful and difficult journey, and learn how to live again.

The Herald posted this today. Just so you all know, the money I used to give back to the Waiuku community was out of my own pocket, not out of the Give-a-little money.

I'm going home on Friday, after spending most of the last 4.5wks in Waiuku. I'm scared about the future, I don't want this new life. Forever heartbroken. -Andrea

Still no sign of Daniel in this beautiful, dark place.

Daniel’s family really appreciate the wonderful help and kindness of the public in helping to find

Daniel. Please continue to keep an eye out for him if you are along any of the west coast beaches or

inlets north of Karioitahi Beach. The family continue to search and light plane searching is still

currently in operation when conditions are suitable with the Police helicopter is still keeping an eye out.

Today the private plane we’ve been offered will fly out of Ardmore and search along the Āwhitu coast. We are so grateful.

Daniel’s mum is on the northern side of the Manukau Heads/Harbour doing coastline searches daily, and the family will head back to Waiuku tomorrow to walk the Awhitu Coast beaches for a few days. We now have a few landowner contacts so we might be able to arrange some better/easier beach access points.

    Doing what we can.

Daniel has been missing for two weeks now.

Last night the Police rang and talked about "managing expectations".

They have looked and looked in all the right places at all the right times, based on their experience and their modelling.

They said the chances of finding Daniel are now "very low".It is possible we might never get him back.

There will be no more official beach searches.

Further official searches are unlikely unless a sighting report is received.

However the Police helicopter sometimes travels that coast for other jobs and they will keep an eye out.

Also Daniel's uncle works with helicopters in Auckland and has been able to help with looking along the coast. He also has access to another fixed wing aircraft that will help with the search and last night we received the generous offer of a private plane out of Ardmore from a couple who also recently lost a son. They have coast search experience and are looking at flying today and early next week as conditions allow. These aircraft will work together in conjunction with SARS and Police to keep searching for us.

We are so very grateful for all this help and for everyone who has walked or ridden the beaches looking for Daniel. Special thanks again to Chris and Sharon and family, I don't know what we would have done without you guys. A huge heartfelt thanks also to those who have donated to help cover some of our search expenses and for all your messages of support and love.

We are going to keep searching along the coast beaches towards Manukau Heads and up towards Piha in the coming weeks for as long as practicable in the hope of finding our Daniel.

Thanks so much everyone for all your support and prayers. We can't thank you enough.

Daniel has been missing ten days now. Tomorrow SAR will search the coast north and south of Hamilton's Gap, where we have been searching since Thursday 27 April. The Police will also help with their dogs. Daily morning and evening flyovers are still being done up and down the coast by Police and Coastguard. Locals and family are out every day searching on foot and quad bikes. Today's update from the Police is that from the evidence they have, it looks like Daniel drove from Papamoa to Waiuku during the day on Saturday 22 April. He had earlier told his mother, brother and father about his plans to visit Waiuku and Karioitahi. He took his dog and bought lunch, some drinks and an Anzac poppy on the way. He drove to Karioitahi Beach and text a mate in Papamoa that he "wouldn't be home till late". Somewhere between 5-6pm when the sun was setting over the sea he went for a swim and hasn't been seen since. We will keep looking for our Daniel for as long as possible. We just want him home.
