Support our amazing friend Kelly McNabb to fight her brain tumour

  • February 2016 update

      25 February 2016

Here's another update from the amazing Kelly...

    Apologies for the late update.

As you know I had my third brain surgery (12 months to the day of my first) in December after the surgery day being bumped along for a couple of days in Wellington. It’s a shame there was someone more needy than me, as it means someone must have had a rough day. Remember that every time your surgery gets bumped, it’s possibly because someone else needs your spot more urgently.

We made the most of the time as a family and spent some time tripping around Wellington until my surgery. Meant another week of accommodation to find, but Brendon managed!

Surgery itself went well, it’s taken me a long time to recover this time though. A lot more fatigued.

The Avastin is on hold at present – there had to be a period of time before and after surgery of not giving it due to the risks associated with wound healing etc.

Unfortunately I got a clot in my leg also, after surgery, so am now on a drug called clexane to stop my blood clotting as quick.

I have completed another treatment phase of Radiotherapy (28 doses), with no chemo. Avastin could be used with radiotherapy but it makes you more sensitive to the radiotherapy, which is something that is not ideal in my situation as it is my second time around of having radiotherapy. It might be too much radiation to the brain.

I have had 2 MRI scans of my brain since surgery, which have been ok, but we know it is aggressive so I’m keen to get the next phase of treatment underway. I hope to meet with my medical oncologist very soon to make a plan. We are keen to look at immunotherapy options in addition to the Avastin if need be.

Thank you for all your ongoing support. The wee boys have done well coping with the changes in routine, and Brendon is recovering well from his shoulder surgery.

The presentation to PHARMAC went well, but it could be another 6 months before we hear anything yet! Lets hope we can get Avastin funded for those that may benefit from it!

Your messages are truly welcome, but I may be a little slow at replying depending on the day! I’ll update you further once I have something to report.

  • 11th December - Surgery Update

      11 December 2015

    Hi everyone

A quick update on behalf of Kelly, who had surgery yesterday (Thursday), to remove a couple of tumours. Surgery went well, and she reports this morning that other than a headache she is otherwise pretty fine, and had a good night. She has seen Brendon and her lovely wee boys, Daniel and Jacob this morning for cuddles.

Keep all your positive thoughts and well wishes directed her way, it's very much appreciated!

    Best wishes

    The Kelly McNabb Support Team

  • Update - 2 December 2015

      2 December 2015

Here's the latest news from Kelly...

    Hello Everyone!

Thank you all for your ongoing support. I’ve been feeling well, tired at times – but who isn’t in this busy life we all lead!

In my last update I mentioned that the Avastin was on hold that week while the specialist reviewed my scans. I had a fancy scan called a FET Scan (not a typo medical people – like a PET but a different tracer is used). Unfortunately it showed a small tumour growing and also a little bit of regrowth at the original tumour site.

So that’s the bad news, but the good news is that the neurosurgeons are happy to operate again to remove as much tumour as possible. If they haven’t given up, then that’s a good sign! I head into surgery on 7th December all going well. The coincidence is that it will be 12 months since my original diagnosis and first surgery.

This doesn’t necessarily mean the Avastin was not working – remember it was always about slowing the growth and not a cure. I made it to my birthday! After surgery we will look at follow up treatments that we can’t decide on just yet. This may be Radiotherapy, Chemotherapy, Avastin, or a combination of these.

In other good news, I have had confirmation that my application to Pharmac for Avastin funding in Recurrent GBM is going forward to the committee meeting in February for consideration of funding (this is for all of NZ, not just me!). I have been invited to give a presentation in support of the application. Not great timing going into brain surgery next week, however it will happen! I have approached Roche (the drug company that makes Avastin) to give the presentation as they will have the most recent data, and I also have some very clever friends who will be able to help out if I can’t do it myself.

That’s all for now. I’ll keep you all updated as time goes on. We have all just had a lovely family holiday together before the pending surgery, and made some wonderful memories. We took lots of photos and the joy on Daniel’s and Jacob’s faces were priceless.

  • Birthday target achieved!

      25 November 2015

Sorry for the late update but we have been busy! As a family we have been enjoying life and doing what we can!

I have reached my first goal thanks to all of your support and generosity - and Avastin - I’m sure – my birthday!

In July after my second surgery, I really did not think I would survive to see my next birthday. But I have, and over the last few months I have had great quality of life, allowing me to spend loads of time with family and friends.

Christmas Day is my next goal! We have started decorating already and getting prepared for Daniel and Jacob. Daniel was most disappointed the morning after we had put up the Christmas Tree to find no presents – I had to explain it wasn’t quite Christmas yet.

The Avastin is on hold next week while my most recent scans are reviewed by the specialists, just in case there may be something there that needs surgery. There has to be a break before and after surgery to allow for healing. We will know more later this week.

Thanks to all those helping out with the fundraising activities, particularly our Fundraising Golf Tournament organised by Norwoods.

    Thank you EVERYONE,

From Kelly, Brendon, Daniel, & Jacob

  • Update on my journey...

      20 October 2015

Here's the latest update from Kelly...

The last couple of weeks have been great! I’ve had a lot more energy and have been able to spend a lot more time inside and out playing with Daniel and Jacob. This is the quality time I wanted to get!

Thank you to all who have organised, sponsored, supported, donated and participated in all the fundraising activities. They have all been successful, and that’s because of you all. Since the last update we have seen money raised through a Quiz Night, Play House Building (with Mitre 10 Mega and NZDF), Auctions for handmade goods, Cocktail Evening in Waiouru, and are now looking ahead to a Golf Tournament supported by Norwood to be held at Linton Camp.

After this we will have a break, as we all look forward to Christmas. Christmas Day is a strong goal of mine so let’s make it a good one!

I am really pleased to say that my application for AVASTIN to be funded for all people with recurrent Glioblastoma Multiforme (Grade IV) will be going to the Pharmacology and Therapeutics Advisory Committee (PTAC) meeting in February 2016. This is PHARMAC’s primary clinical advisory committee who considers the evidence and makes the recommendation for funding or not of a particular drug.

PHARMAC has never received a funding request for Avastin for use in my situation. The drug company hadn’t bothered as it had been turned down for other indications. Once I discovered, through my cousin Glen, that a consumer and not just health professionals could apply for funding - I was on to it! The aim of all this media coverage has not just been about me fundraising, it was about getting the word out, that there are treatment options for recurrent GBM that should be available to all, not just those that can afford it.

The application to PHARMAC is not for funding specifically for me; it is to fund Avastin for all who need it in New Zealand.

Thank you all again for your wonderful support, particularly my husband Brendon, my parents and my delightful sons, Daniel and Jacob who are the greatest motivator anyone needs to survive.

  • Third Treatment and progress

      1 October 2015

    1 October 2015

The administration of my third dose of Avastin was filmed as part of a segment that aired on Seven Sharp on Monday 28th September.

The outpouring of love and support seen through the comments and donations received has been overwhelming. I read every comment and thank you all for the encouragement. I am amazed by the generosity of people I know and those I don’t know, but are touched by our story.

The total raised on this Give a Little page jumped $14000 after the segment was shown. Included in this total was the amount raised from the Café Brie Fundraiser of an incredible $8760.

    http://www.stuff.co.nz/life-style/well-good/inspire-me/72389267/thank-you-to-everyone-for-giving-me-hope

Also included was the donation from the Rose City Dancesport Festival of $648.78, on top of $63.20 donated on the day. The Rose City Dancesport Festival is organised annually by Shirley Wall Academy of Dance, and this year all profits, were donated to my cause. An amazing gesture from a wonderful dance teacher.

But the most exciting thing of all is that on Monday I got the MRI results from my scan done on Saturday morning. It was great. The not so normal bits are improving and there was no new tumour growth. So all in all - the scan showed what looks to be response to treatment. It seems like the Avastin might very well be working as hoped. I will have another scan in around 4 weeks, to track how it is all going, knowing that once the Avastin stops working, we want to stop using it due to the cost. But we are hopeful that it will continue to work, particularly with this early response to treatment, giving me more time as hoped.

Thank you all for your help on this journey of mine and my family.

    Kelly xoxo

  • Second Avastin Treatment

      8 September 2015

    Here's what Kelly says...

The last two weeks have been taken slowly due to being more tired. This may be due to the Avastin, the brain tumour, or just not enough sleep and trying to keep up with two toddlers. I'll have a MRI brain after my third dose to see if there is improvement in the scans or earlier if there is any concerns. Meanwhile am using the good times I have to video me reading books for the kids and writing cards. I've also recorded a few versions of me singing happy birthday for Daniel and Jacob. So the recordings will grow with them. Fingers crossed that won't be needed for a while yet! The Avastin will work!

Thanks everyone for your extremely generous support! Kelly had her first Avastin treatment on Monday 24th August, and she reports that she tolerated it fairly well. The local Manawatu Standard newspaper published two articles on Kelly and her battle - see www.stuff.co.nz/manawatu-standard and search for Kelly McNabb.
