Support Walter Gosling & Family Through the Fight of Their Lives

  • Honoring Walter: Helping with Funeral & Family Support

      7 June 2025

We’ve updated the goal of this fundraiser to help cover Walters funeral and related costs. As we try to navigate this sudden loss, we’re also doing our best to support family members who are coming from far away to be here and say their goodbyes. This change is really about easing the financial weight on those closest to him right now, so they can focus on grieving and being together. We’re incredibly grateful for all the love and support so far, it’s meant the world. Any help, in any amount, brings us one step closer to giving Walter the farewell he deserves and giving his family a bit of peace and relieve and burden of finances in this painful time of grief.

At 3:57am this morning, our beloved Walter passed away, aged 42. Only 8 weeks after the most devastating news. Our hearts are deeply broken.

Walter was the strength of our whānau, a son, father, fiance, brother, and friend. Even through pain, he carried us with love, humour, courage and so much strength. In his final days, we were blessed to be by his side holding him, laughing, crying, sharing stories, memories, prays & song but most of all love. That time was a sacred gift we will treasure forever.

Now he is free. No more pain, no more struggle.

Rest peacefully, You will always be with us especially when we look into your childrens eyes, smile, embrace their warmth and the lessons you taught them. 🕊️🖤

We thank everyone who supported Walter on his journey. Your love meant everything. From the visits, messages, food, hugsand prays. Special thanks to Hospice South Canterbury and Flying Doctors NZ, you brought him home and kept his dignity and care.

All future funds will go towards Walters funeral, travel and accommodation for whānau, and other related costs, allowing his family to focus on what truly matters, love, memory, and healing.

    Karakia:

Haere atu rā e te rangatira,

Moe mai rā i te rangimārie.

Haere ki te wā kainga, ki te huihuinga o te hunga wairua.

    Go well, dear one.

    Rest now in peace.

Return home to the gathering place of spirits.

Thank you for walking this journey with us. Aroha nui.

  • Update on Walters Journey – June

      6 June 2025

Since our last update, Walter has been unable to begin the recommended treatments, as his body needed time to heal from previous surgeries. His health recently took a turn, and he spent a week in hospice care to better manage his symptoms, especially as his lungs worsened, making it hard for him to breathe. He required oxygen most of the time during this period.

In a brave effort to explore alternative therapies, Walter travelled to Nelson/Motueka for OZONE treatment. He was able to complete three sessions, but unfortunately, his condition declined rapidly. After two days in Nelson Hospital, he was flown back to Timaru by the incredible New Zealand Flying Doctors allowing him to be reunited with his waiting family.

Walter is now in hospice care in Timaru. His close family including his Fiancé, Children, parents and siblings have been by his side, and other loved ones have had the chance to visit and spend precious time with him. We want to sincerely thank the Timaru hospice team for their outstanding care and support during this incredibly emotional time.

Walters journey has been full of challenges, but it has also shown us the power of love, community, and kindness. We are so grateful for every donation, message, visit, and gesture of support. Thank you for standing with Walter and our whānau.

    With heartfelt thanks,

    Walters Family

  • Update on Walters Journey

      26 May 2025

Since we first created this page, there have been significant developments in Walters journey. After his initial surgeries, Walter has been at home, awaiting another operation and navigating possible treatment plans for his ongoing battle with cancer.

In recent weeks, we’ve received the heartbreaking news that Walters cancer has metastasised. What was previously diagnosed as an aggravated back injury and regrettably not thoroughly investigated at the time has now been confirmed as cancer in his spine. This has brought immense challenges, both physically and emotionally, but Walter continues to face each day with incredible strength and courage.

Despite the pain and the daily hurdles, Walter has been surrounded by love. He’s been uplifted by visits from family and friends, and he’s had precious, cherished time with his children and his fiancé moments that mean the world to him.

Right now, Walter is working hard to manage the pain and adjust to a new way of living while he awaits the next stage of his treatment.

We want to thank every one of you who has supported Walter whether through generous donations, your time, or simply sending kind words and love. Your support has made a real difference during a time when it’s been so deeply needed.

Please continue to keep Walter in your thoughts as he bravely continues this fight.

    With gratitude,

    Walters Whānau
