"Help & Support Zane Beloe"

  • Week 7 and 8

      25 March 2015

    Hi all

Firstly I am going to say it again - we are absolutely blown away with the beautiful kindness and continual generosity of you wonderful people donating to this page, to assist Zane with his ongoing expenses, prescriptions etc associated with his care for his cancer. The grand total as of today 25/3 for the givealittle page now sits at $7,366 - we truly can't thank you enough, and wish to thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Zane is having a very tough time and for now, he has written his last blog below, as it is a real struggle to even write a text. I will keep you informed when I can, with Zane's permission. For now, he has also asked for No Visitors to his home. If you wish to contact him he has included his email details below and he will get back to you if able.

Thanks again for your love and kindness for our special mate Zane. Please feel free to share this page & update on behalf of Zane.

    Here is Zane's Blog.....

    Hi all

Unfortunately after much deliberation I have decided to pull the pin on my Cancer Blog and so attached today will be the last blog until things improve.

I have come to this point because the side effects have certainly arrived and are not pleasant. The going has been extremely tough and there are times that I have wondered whether I could carry on.

Knowing that I have your support out there certainly helps.

It has been extremely tough on my family as they bear some if not all of my frustrations.

I am lucky to have the people around me that matter and once again I my must sincerely acknowledge my loving partner Jo Jo for her ongoing love and support.

It is now 16 days since I have finished treatment and there has only been a slight improvement. I get very drowsy, cannot concentrate, and even sending a txt takes an eternity.

To this extent I am still not taking visitors.

I have picked up an eye infection since I returned and they have only just discovered what is the possible cause.

Obviously this has affected my vision for any computer work.

So my day is basically the same old same old. I am sure none of you want to hear about that so until things improve I will sign off.

Please if you feel free drop an email and I will respond if capable.

    Love to you all.

Remember – Be Kind to One Another

    Play Hard

    Live Love Laugh

Zane’s Cancer Blog Update March 2015

    Tongue & Tonsil Cancer

    Chemo Radiation

    January 2015

    Wednesday 11th March

Still not overly flash so decided to book into Dr.

Tara took time off work and took me down, as I am unable to drive.

My regular Dr was not there so had to see Andrew Watts.

Found it quite amazing that no records had been transferred to my GP from ChCh and that no morphine doses were stated on any records.

Dr was quite impressed with throat area and in in his opinion looked remarkably good.

Eye is extremely inflamed and Dr does not really know why, some eye ointment prescribed.

Got repeat scripts for meds and a lozenge to help kill any fungi in throat

Groceries from Raewards as I'm going to cook tea for the girls to keep me occupied.

Home and completed one session of meds. This takes about an hour by the time you have cleaned and flushed gear, crushed and flushed pills.

Jo out for Dinner and I had cooked the girls a nice Sirloin Steak accompanied by Balsamic Mushroom Cream Sauce, Moroccan Creamed Leeks, Garlic Salted Zucchini's, Carrots and Broccoli with Hollandaise Sauce.

Tara and Jo when and purchased a about 36 little bottles and Tara dated them and put correct times on them before filling them with the correct amount of Morphine.

This has proved a godsend as I have had trouble remembering if I have taken the morph or not and leaves it opening to O.D’ing and even though that may sound a good option at times it is not the correct thing to do.

    Thursday 12th March

Thought I was feeling alright but as the day wore on things turned to custard.

Jo came out and forced me to walk around the block which was great, Should be doing more of it but I am a bit weak and get a bit light headed. Supposed to stay out of the sun as well.

    Friday 13th

Normal routine after another sleepless night and things still not bad. At times I wonder where I should be in hospital. Bringing up Mucous or trying to bring it up is not nice and I can assure you there is a faire bit of colourful language floating around. Not overly fair on people around me either that I love and who are trying to help. They sometimes bare my frustrations and they should not have to do that. I thank them for their understanding.

Zac came round and took me back to Dr’s surgery as he had forgotten to write me a script for one of my meds.

Blood test at Medlad for Blood counts and QSP Pharmacy Richmond to see if they could change my Morph script.

My fill in Dr has prescribed morph @ a strength 5 times stronger than what I had been prescribed which is fine as by right you just take a smaller dose. I.e. instead of taking 25ml now only take 5ml’

However if one forgets when he took it or even if measuring out the chances are there for and increased dose which could be fatal.

Oncology Nurse Shelley Shea rang to check and offered to come round which I gratefully accepted.

She arrive ad around 2.00pm and went over what was happening in the presence of Tara.

Shelley would leave most Dr’s for dead and is extremely thorough.

She was still working at 6.00pm Friday night trying to resolve issues to help me. The Drs has gone home and had not even got back to her QSP Richmond was also trying to resolve problems with the morph for me and having the same problem.

Watched the Crusaders who finally got into gear with my two favourite girls Jo and Tara.

They had Sub Way and other goodies for tea.

    Saturday 14th March

A quiet day for me around home while Jo did the housework, washing, groceries etc.

Napping in the afternoon after Jo had completed another one of her daily chores, Applied White Soft Paraffin Petroleum Jelly to my Neck Burns and another soothing back massage which helps loosen the mucous,

Jo off home at 5.00pm after picking up her youngest daughter and my No1. Daughter Tara out partying for the night.

So a quiet night watching rugby and into bed around 9.20pm.

Honestly I really cant work out why I do get into bed early considering I will be up most of the night. The Mucous seems to be moving and is now coming from a different area in my mouth.

I still take the Gelclair which is really good in the mouth and quite soothing.

    Sunday 15th March

Up and out of bed approx. 0700 but after completing daily routine did not feel too good and so back to bed. Mucous being brought up contains a bit of blood, but nothing that I would get alarmed about.

If there is any consistent bleeding there is a worry as because of my low blood count, bleeding may not stop. If that is the case I have to present to the hospital urgently

So besides writing my blog I am just chilling and dozing off or dropping off or both.

Jo will be coming out at around 3.ish to dress my neck and to give me my daily massage.

    https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/supportzanebeloe

Many Thanks to all those that have donated to my cause and to those that have just donated.

It is as I have said very amazing and one day I can assure you I will repay you. I wish I could find out whom the guest Donors were however if you are reading this blog please accept my sincere thanks and if you would like to contact me feel free.

    zane.beloe@vodafone.co.nz

As of today 24th the Donations Total stood at $6566.00 and once again I find it humbling to see donations, in particular one from the Stoke Rugby Club for $200.00.

Once again it proves to me what rugby and sport in general is all about, The friendships made and maintained through rugby is what the game is all about.

The Stoke Rugby Club also have a member on this site:

BAZZA LEARY - Father of 6, Grandfather of 13 - Bazza is currently battling a viral infection called Bickerstaff Encephalitis on the brain.

On Jan 31st 2015, Bazza was taken ill with flu like symptoms which deteriorated rapidly and he was hospitalised and put into intensive care unable to communicate with anyone. From there he has been transferred to Wellington hospital for further treatment as this is a very rare condition.

Only 62 other known cases in the world and not a lot known about it. He is in the process of having plasmapheresis to cleanse the blood. This is 5 treatments over a 10 day period as other antibiotics did not work. The recovery for this is unknown and will be a lengthy process.

    January 2015

    Wednesday 4th March

Shuttle to hospital on 1130 shuttle for treatment at 1330, Visit with Charlie Noonhan, Registrar to Iain Ward, Julia – Dietician and Speech Therapist.

Managed to get another early treatment which commenced at approx, 1220.

Charlie detected Thrush (Candida) in the top of the mouth which maybe the cause of some of the pain. So another sript and som more drugs to add to the cabinet.

Candy redressed neck area which has shown rapid improvement after one day

Just to give you some idea of where times goes in a day alonside Peg Feeding, cleaning etc. our visit to the hospital entailed some 3hrs alone.

Bought Jo Jo a little gift for being so patient with me and running around after me all the time. It is truly appreciated and considering I can no longer talk it can become quite trying.

I write things down for Jo and she forgets that she can talk and starts replying to me in writing. You’re funny Jo Jo.

I gargle and spit all the time and like I mean all the time which is not only a !@#$ing pain but doesn’t look to flash.

Jo Jo reckons most people have a Pit Stop whereas I have a Spit Stop.

    Thursday 5th March

Up earlier as had been advised late Wedeneday of possible Chemo at 0915 . Bloods were still low but decisions being made. Took additional meds incase Chemo was a go.

Caught 0820 bus into hospital and Chemo given the freen light. Found the vein without too much trouble and all went smoothly.

Radiation at 1.30pm and Gabrielle, Nona’s daughter and trainee Medical student attended the Radiation along withJo Jo and also the re-dressing of the neck area. Radiation was a bit touch and go but I was adamant I wasn’t going to stop the machine. ………and you wouldn’t believe I did it!!!!!!!! !@@$#ing Beauty.

One to Go and we’ve knocked the bastard off Sherpa.!!!!!!!!

    Yea Ha!!!!!!

Caught shuttle back to hospital and JoJo has gone for a walk to get herself some lunch after changing mouthwash bottles, washing syringes and jugs, changing towels and making sure everything is hygienic. Spent 6hrs at the hospital today

Suitcase ready to pack and Brent arriving to take us back to Sunny Nelson approx. 1300pm.

    Friday 6th March 2015

Last day of treatment. Caught Shuttle at 0830 for treatment at 0930. Very nervous, however it all went without a hitch. You would not believe how much of a relief it is to know that this is your last treatment and the last time you will be wearing Jim Carrey…. You forgot didn’t you……The Mask.

Some people throw it away when they have finished. I have elected to keep mine and use it for a Fancy Dress or maybe Leonie might want it for Wearable Arts….now there’s an idea!!

Hugs, Cuddles and Kisses all round from an amazing treatment team. Believe it or not I can be quite an emotional person but today I managed to retain all tears. Not that I didn’t want to but try being emotional when u can’t swallow.

Shuttle back to Daffodil House and started to complete packing. Brent arrived early at 1145,

Finally packed and said all the goodbyes to the amazing staff at Daffodil House, and were underway heading for good old Sunny Nelson at approx. 1.30 after stopping at Pharmacy to get repeat of my Morph. For some reason getting a repeat of this drug is not easy, not sure why???

Brent and Jo had Coffee stop competitions all the way home while I had the normal wee wee, spit spit competition on my own.

Arrived Home approx. 1830. Home Sweet Home.

Tara and Jo had Fish And Chips for Tea which looked so yummy.

Watched Super Rugby and by the time I’d finished my health chores and climbed into bed it was 2330.

    Saturday 7th March

A quiet day and raining, spent time setting up areas to take all my meds. Times and routines worked out.

General Tidy up around the house with Jo Jo taking control, the little darling.

Jo left at 1700 to pick up Leanna her youngest daughter and I chillaxed on the couch. Watched the rugby and had and early night. Only thing missing besides Jo was a Dozen cold Stein Pure and Chip and Garlic and Pumpkin Dip.

Thinks are supposed to get worse and unfortunately they are not wrong.

I coughed up some very heavy mucous which contained blood and at times thought I was going to choke of vomit.

I have been using the Dehumidifier regularly which is supposed to help with mucositis. Salt water gargles are performed very very regularly, and I am getting very very drowsy and drop off every so often which is quite scary.

    Sunday 8th March 2015

Another quiet day and settling into a routine with taking of meds and doing this that and the other.

Jo Jo arrived just before lunch and dressed my shoulders which are looking a lot better. A lovely back massage helped alleviate aches and pains. Jo went and got groceries’ for me and I managed to get outside and pick my overgrown Pesto and wash and cleaned it before turning it into Basil Pesto. Made approx. 1 litre …. Pity I can’t taste or eat it it.

    Monday 9th March 2015

Didn’t feel to flash when I woke up so dosed up on meds and went back to bed but after an hour or so Id had enough of that. Showered and ablutions completed.

I enjoy cooking and so for something to keep me occupied I have made some Paprika Chicken for tea which is cooking away slowly in the crockpot. Tara loves this recipe and I will be giving Jo Jo some for her tea,. Have been completing my blog but keep dozing off so going to have a short break.

Bringing up seriously thick mucous now which makes you feel like being sick. Girls (Jo & Tara) like the Chicken.

Visit from Oncology Nurse, Annie Walker who will arrange burn cream as was provided for me in ChCh by Canterbury District Health Board. She reckons another 10 days before I start turning the corner, which I certainly hope so.

I am using the De-Humidifier quite regularly which supposedly frees up the mucous.

Jo dressed my neck in the burnt areas and at this stage we are just leaving it how it is and concentrating on the burnt areas only.

I keep drifting off now and the powers of concentration are definitely lapsing. Even sending a txt message takes and eternity. Thank !@# for Spell Checkers

    Tuesday 10th March

Another restless night with lots of heavy mucous which is actually good because it means we are getting rid of it.

Got Zac to pick up some Optrex and bring around as my left eye appears to have some sort of infection in it and is very sore.

Also got Zac to put some cream on my burns which were starting to irritate.

Chace my little grandson came round with Zac which was quite uplifting.

Back on the bed and dozing off with the dehumidifier wrapped around my head.

Can’t even watch one of the many movies Craig has lent me as I just doze off.

Email received from Annie advising that any cream I require for my burns, I will have to purchase myself. What!!!!! In Ch Ch it is supplied as part of your care so I will obviously making further inquiries.

It is my intention to continue writing this blog until things improve and as I said at the start if it becomes intolerable just hit the alt+Delete Key.

    https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/supportzanebeloe

Many Thanks to all those that have donated to my cause and to those that have just donated.

It is as I have said totally amazing and one day I can assure you I will repay you. I wish I could find out who the guest Donors were however if you are reading this blog please accept my sincere thanks and if you would like to contact me feel free.

    zane.beloe@vodafone.co.nz

Even in the last 11 hours $250.00 has been donated with a total of $5666.00. Considering Craig & Tracy only started this page on the 12th February, 2015, just short of a month ago, blows me away.

Thanks to everyone out there. It really and sincerely means a lot to me.

    January 2015 WEEK 5 UPDATE

    Wednesday 25th Feb

Awoke this morning and throat extremely painful. Could not eat dinner last night. Can hardly talk this morning and I know a lot of you would find that quite amazing.

Fortisip and all fluids down the tube.

Did some washing, trying to get rid of all the Fatty cream that is rubbed onto my skin and has transferred to my tee shirts.

    Caught 1250 Shuttle to hospital.

Treatment went fine but is now quite scary. Have sort of developed a technique to prevent swallowing. However when breathing I hear a gurgling noise in the back of my throat.

Visit with Dr Iain Ward my Radiation Specialist and Maree Johnston my Oncologist Nurse and go to person when in ChCh. Iain has confirmed that the stopping of Chemo will not affect the outcome of my treatment which obviously is a relief. Bloods will be taken again on Monday and a final decision will be made.

My Morph has been lifted to 20mls every 4 hours and hopefully that makes a difference to the pain as to be quite frank the pain has always been there and the Morph seems to have little effect. A Dozen nice cold Steinlager Pures would have more affect, maybe 2 dozen.

Have been told to bathe my skin now in salt water and baking soda solution to prevent infection. Another job for No1 Daughter!!!

Also had appointments with Dietician and Speech Therapist.

Maree signed off yesterday as she is going on leave. Had a big hug and was a wee bit emotional. I am not into saying goodbyes and Maree is such a lovely person and has been extremely supportive. Only problem is that she is a Chiefs supporter, which Tara is happy about. Sorry J.Lo

I have been told once again that Head and Neck Cancer Treatment is one of the harshest any person can undertake and while I think I have been lucky I can now understand and know why. Still, others in the world are worse off than me.

So no more feeding through the mouth and my only nutrition will come from Fortisip through the PEG. Crushed up pills will also be inserted with water through the PEG. So 7 (seven) treatments left and counting. Radiation Specialist reckons I will get through all the treatments. I certainly hope so as stopping radiation will affect the chances of cure.

The Radiation Team delivering the treatment reckon I’m marvellous ……but I already knew that. They told Tara I was an A-Plus patient and that some people with far less side effects complain that they just can’t do. They said I was extremely positive and that it certainly makes their job easier

Whew ….Bit of a head swell!!!!!

Tara had Pizza for tea from Tuton Benne up I Merivale. Olde Zano ..He just had Fortisip!!!!

    Thursday 26th Feb

Kyle has arranged for Tara and me to attend Crusaders training and is picking us up at around 10.00.

Tara has been given strict instructions and is to wear no Chiefs gear whatsoever. Find it quite amusing she wants to buy an All Black Jersey for Ritchie to autograph when she thinks Sam Cane is better……Sam who???????? Exactly. Ritchie’s the man. The Legend!!!!!!!

Crushed pills this morning and fed down the tube……..Got so many pills and drugs I’m like a walking Chemist shop. Just about sent a Blue one down there by mistake!!!! LoL

So down the PEG today , so far 20mls Morph. 200ml Ensure (Food Supplemeny similar to Fortisip), 20mls Paracetomol, Four crushed pills, 300mls water.

Kyle picked us up at 1015 for Crusdaders Traing at Rugby Park at 1030. Kyle had a Concrete pour so left Tara and I to it. Spoke with Billy who has joined the injured with a slight Hammy twinge.

Don’t know who enjoyed traing the most Tara or I. Seems to be plenty of photos with Dan Carter.

My All Black jersey now adorns the signature of the Worlds Greastet ever rugby player, yes that of one Richard Hugh McCaw, to those that know him me included “Ritchie”.

He is known to Tara as “Rollaway Ritchie”

Wasn’t feeling to flash towards end of training and had to ram some Fortisip down me at the training. Kyle dropped us back to Daffodil and caught shuttle into Hospital. I was feeling extremely tired.

Treatment at last, onto the table lined up in room, cleared final line up. Radiation Machine spinning ready to fire and ….nothing. Radiation team back in the room and mask removed as they were going to have to do a complete reset as they weren’t happy with the setup. Why this day when I was really knackered. Still better than being zapped in the wrong place and shows just how caring and experienced these people are.

Back down on the bed and it seemed to take an eternity to set up. Treatment finally completed ……just may I add as a bit of fluid building in the back of my throat.

Treatment finished at 1410 but because of a muck up couldn’t get my taxi chit for tomorrow for 0730 treatment so missed the 1420 shuttle and had to wait until 1510 for the next one due to afternoon tea.

Back to the unit swallowed all my drugs and Fortisip and finally hit the sack for a wee nana nap @ 1600 waking at 1735.

    Felt 100 % better.

Tara has gone out to visit her Aunty, Lindy and pick up some more Morph for DaddyO

Early night as quite fatigued and early start tomorrow.

    Friday 27th Feb 2015

Up at 0600 to complete daily routine ready to catch taxi @ 7.00am for treatment start time of 0730.

Poor Tara , she not used to ghetting out of bed so early.

Very Very Very sore mouth today and Neck area where burnt.

I would have to say that I am now in some pain although not excruciating but pain that is constant.

    Still one must push on!!!!!!

Treatment Ok only just with a fair bit of gurgling whist lying on the table ……..sounds like a death rattle LoL….Wish I could Laugh out Loud!!!!!!!!

Shuttle back to Daffodil. Loaded up on to some more drugs and then drove, no not me, Tara up to Westfield Riccarton and shouted her brekky at Coffee Culture. Bacon on top of Smashed Avocado and Feta on Ciabatta Bread, Vine Tomatoes and a Poached Egg.

Back to unit and txted Maree to see if I could up Morphine from 20ml to25ml and approval given. When I started on Morph a couple of weeks ago I was 5ml. I still take Paracetomol in Conjunction with this.

Maree repeated the fact that the any Cancer Treatment around the Head and Neck Area for Cancer is a tuff tuff treatment, and I should hopefully start to see some light at the end of the Tunnel, two –three weeks after treatment

Had a lovely little Nana Nap as quite buggered probably by the pain.

Out of bed about 5.30pm and back in for the night at around 7.30pm.

Too Buggered to watch the Highlanders. After all its only the Highlanders ????

    Saturday 28th Feb

Up early and feelin a little better and good to have a break from treatment,

Completed daily duties and did the laundry, Cleaned my bedroom as it was looking like a bomb site. I have been taking my gear in there at night so as to allow Tara her beauty sleep.

Tara went into town for a walk and I had a little Nana Nap untill I was awakened by a knock on the door.

Johnny Kemp, Tex’s wife Bronwyn’s brother and a very good mate of mine arrived.

Unfortunately I was unable to talk which is just the way it is now so it was a very brief visit but still one that was appreciated. Thanks Johnny.

Grabbed Johnny’s email address and sent him bloggs so he can get a bettter viewpoint.

Watched NZ demolish The Aussies, unbelievable!!!!!!

Tara gave me lovely back massage…..Jo Jo your jobs on the line.

Went down to the communal room and watched Chiefs demolish Crusdars most embarrasssing.

They obviously haven’t been listening to me at training. Can’t take it away from the Chiefs.

Tara No1 Daughter and avid Chiefs supporter was over the top as would have been my Oncologist Nurse and go to person Maree Johnstone, here in ChCh

    Sunday 1st Feb 2015

No sleep at all last night as awakening all the time with sore throat and deep gurgling noises.

Spat out a bit of blood last night which was probably from mouth ulcers. Seemed OK this morning

Finally got the dehumidifier out and will give that a crank up this arvo.

Cleaned up Unit and Tara has stacked the car ready to leave for good old Sunny Nelson.

Very quiet day and in quite a bit of pain which needs to be sorted.. A lot of little wee sleeps with dehumidifire but jury is still out on its effectiveness.

Tried to watch a movie but can’t concentrate.

In bed @ 1945 as tired and sore with burnt skin and extremely sore throat.

    Monday 2nd 2014

Not a good nite. Slept with dehumidifier on but does not appear to make much difference. Awakining every 30-45 minutes. Mucositus difficult to break. Its like having a bubble stuck in your throat and trying to pop it. Can’t Cough !!! Can’t do anything.

Only releif appears to be Salt water and Baking soda gargle and then it is need again avery 30-45 minutes. Made up a Gargle with Xylocaine which numbs your throat but that lasts about 5-10 minutes. Gelclair provides releif for approx. 30 minutes.

Treatment not until 1550 but I aint waiting till then. Skin is red raw in some places.

Really looking forward to my little Darling Jo Jo arriving this afternoon. Jo is staying until treatment finishes this Friday and I am a wee bit worried about that, with what is going on at the moment.

Seen nurse who said she would apply a dressing but it would have to come off and be reapplied after treatment which was not due until 1550.

Managed to sweet talk …..or should I say sweet whisper the Radiation nurses in to bringing my appointment forward, which they happily did. Treatment completed around 1240 and managed to get through it. Getting scary now but the treatment team knows who they are dealing with and are ready to stop the machine at the raise of a hand. So Four to go.

Had my neck area dressed and bandaged by the lovely Candy, much bettter and very sooothing. The dressing will come off everyday before I shower for radiation and the nurses will dress daily after radiation.

Bloods taken for platelet count to see if I am able to have chemo tomorrow.

Back to unit to await the arrival of Jo. Must have been a little too excited as I forgot to pick up my prescription of Morphine. Walked down to Merivale and back, groceries for Jo Jo and a litre of Morphine for me…….not to be taken all at the one sitting.

Jo being the good girl she is stripped……..no you got it wrong…. The bed and remade it.

Got Jo to ring the hospital to check bloods as I have not heard back from them.

Another early night. Left Jo to do her exercises. Impossible to get to sleep because of throat and up very 15 minutes. Used Dehumidifier but no difference

    Tuesday 3rd Feb

Awake all !@#$ing nite. Feel sorry for poor old Jo. Tried sleeping in the lounge sitting up, but no difference. Got up about 0700 and completed daily routine, to try and let Jo get a bit more beasuty sleep.

Rang Oncloogy and checked on my Bloods but still to low, so to do bloods again on Wedneday for possibe Thursday Chemo.

Cleaned unit or should I say Jo did. Bloody good girl this Jo Jo.

Treatment at 1300. Went in early and managed to get early treatment. Got through treatment OK but only just.

Back to unit to discover I’d lost my phone, so into instant panic. However managed to keep cool and traced steps and located at the Hospital

Raewyn the Shuttle bus driver returned it to me on her nxt trip.

Jo walked down to Merivale for 2-3 hrs, did the necessary therapeutic shopping, that only a woman must do. I mucked around with the dehumidifier and changed a few settings and managed to get about 1½hrs sleep

Went too bed after completeing daily chores and they are becoming a chore. Managed to sleep for approx. 1½-2hr sleeps before mucositus having to be cleared and correct meds to be taken

    Wednesday 4th March

Up and out of bed. Meds, fortisip, clean teeth, gargle etc etc etc

Nikki one of my Oncology nurses phoned Jo to advise and confirm that Chemo will be at 0915 tomorrow if my bloods are satisfactory.

Gargle bottles refilled with Salt/Baking Powder solution, Towels sorted and replaced general tidy up by Jo Jo.

Had a visit in the afternoon from Raelene Anderson who was the long-time Bar Manager at the Star and Garter.

Raelene was down here supporting her ex-husband Carl who is suffering from cancer on the lung and emphasymia. Had a good old chin wag and catch up. I was really proud of her for standing by her ex. Family is Family. Thanks Raelene for your support to me as well during these trying times.

Potato @ Fish for tea Xylocaine helped swallow, but fish too coarse so it went down the drain. Maggi Cream of Chicken soup very good.

    Thursday 19th

180ml water down tube followed by 200ml Fortisip and another 60ml water. Top Brekky

My Loving Partner Jo Jo arrives today and am really looking forward to the company of her caring and loving attitude and her zest for life. Positivity!!!!!!!!

Treatment at 11.00am this morning and I have invited Gabrielle, Nona’s daughter to come and watch.

Hope I don’t ruin her for life when I expose the 6 pack

Have made initial inquiries with a very well respected Acupuncturist in Nelson which sounds very promising. Back to unit – Drugs pumped Routine completed

Bus to Northlands Mall – Groceries to cook tea for my darling Jo Jo.

Can’t wait. I’m a bit of a loner but it will be good to have some company especially my little darling……Whew that’s enough of that romantic stuff. Bus back to Merivale and stopped at a really great Deli/Butchery and purchased a nice piece of Rib Eye.

Jo Jo finally arrived after getting dropped off in Kaiapoi and catching bus in the rain and missing the stop.

    Jo’s Tea My Tea

Cooked her a lovely tea and I had a bowl of chicken Noodle soup which I managed to get down Iced Chocolate for supper. Fortisip before dinner.

Taking Laxative as Bowels not moving….you no….no shit. Bit of a worry but a side effect of

    Morph.

    Friday 20th Feb

Early start. Up at 6.00pm to catch Taxi to Treatment at 0730.

    Daily routine completed.

Treatment all good. Skin around neck area and chest now starting to get burnt, but the Lovely Jo Jo can now rub a special cream in.

Still sore in the throat with pain that is about 5 on a scale of 1-10 10 being high……Probably exaggerated maybe 4 but only when I swallow. Still think I’m doing OK for Week4.

Weighing in at 93.5kg….Won’t be long before Dion & Milney are giving me a call…….Living on a memory,

Nice Iced Chocolate at Hospital Café and Jo Jo had a friand and a latte.

Jo Jo doing my washing while I do a bit of blog and work work.

Today the rest of the family arrive, with Tara arriving and staying with me for the week. Zac Kirsty Kade and Chace (Bam Bam) arrive also.

Really looking forward to it and hoping everyone carry’s on as normal. i.e. Party time except for me.

The best thing for me is to see people enjoying themselves

Took Jo up to Coffee Culture at Merivale for lunch. She also participated at her favourite hobby, second hand shopping, where she picked up three bargains especially for Merivale

Tammy and Pete Simpson drove up just about literally onto the footpath in Papanui Rd. They had spotted Jo and I walking back from Merivale Mall and had a quick chat.

Tara Zac and Kirsty Kade and Chace arrived around 3.00pm and Jo Jo’s daughter the Lovely Emma her partner Anton and Anton’s brother Brian had also arrived.

Tara and Jo walked down to Merivale and got Fish and chips for tea.

With the help of Xylocaine….Yuk….I managed to eat a whole piece of Blue Cod. No taste but at least I ate and that helps swallowing and the head in the fact I’m eating.

Watched the Chiefs game and an early night.

My old mate Brendan sent down three crates of Veges which will benefit not only me but others at Daffodil House.

Thanks Brendan and to Appleby Fresh

    Saturday 21st

Up earlier and took the Lethal Weapon (Holden SS V8) for a warrant. I had forgotten all about the warrant and Zac had driven down from Nelson without a warrant…..very lucky as no WOF equals no insurance.

Had to get four new tyres which Jo and I did while Zac Kirsty, Kade Chace and Tara headed to Orano Park,

Jo and I caught bus to Northlands and met up with Tara and had some lunch or as you already know they did…. not me.

Bumped into Taylor Connor my very good friends Mark (Chalkie) and Leonie Trathen’s daughter. Taylor is now working down here at Trendz in the mall.

Caught bus home had a quick Nana Nap and headed out to Garden Hotel where Zac was staying.

Had smorgasbord dinner there and if anybody is ever in Christchurch and are hungry this place is your stop. Variety of food is amazing and also tastes good not that I would know.

$29.00 for Dinner $27.00 for me as I am an old @#$er. Kids $5.00 and $3.00.

    Lunch is $21.50

Laxatives final worked and made me feel good, not only to have movement but in the mind as well.

Watched Crusaders beat Highlanders much to the disgust of my kids who support Highlanders.

Home and straight into bed after Jo had rubbed special cream all over my much burnt skin.

    Sunday 22nd

Off to Drexel’s for Brekky with the tribe. As in other blogs this is a must and extreme value for money. Bookings are essential.

I managed to eat Eggs Benedict with Salmon minus the Muffin and Hashbrown and an Iced Chocolate.

Went next door to Time Zone with the Kids who just loved it.

Left Zac and family there and we headed to Dressmart Mall.

Bought some new undies, socks and tee shirts. Tee shirts getting quite munted from all special cream put around my neck and chest area.

Headed back home and feeling quite tired.

Jo headed home with Anton and Emma around 3.00pm after Jo had rubbed some more cream on my burnt skin.

Had a little Nana Nap for a couple of hours.

Tara made some nice soup for tea using lots of goodies and I managed to consume a bowl.

In bed 2110 and out like a light. Woke at 0020 for wee wee which is a good sleep. Woke again at 0430 which again was another good stint. When I wake at this time each day I swallow another dose of Morph which certainly tickles the throat.

    Monday 23rd February 2015.

Woke about 0700 and performed most of the daily routine while Tarz snored her beautiful head off.

Headed off to hospital 1020 with No1 Daughter.

Bloods done in preparation for Chemo tomorrow.

    Weighing in at 92.3kg

Treatment without any hitches although hard to get mouthpiece into mouth before Mask is snapped on. Tara viewed the whole procedure including the setting up in the room before viewing the entire procedure including the scan before final lining up.

The table that I lie on can be move in mm

Asked to see Maree and asked about upping Morph dose as throat not good. Dose now upped from 10ml to 15ml.

Lunch for Tara at hospital Café and back to lodge.

Drove to Tower Junction to try and get new polar fleece but no luck.

Headed to Riccarton Mall where Tara got her hair buzzed, a very cheap place and of a high standard $12.50.

Bumped into Charna and Zoe, two of Tara’s friends. They are down here for training with Canterbury woman’s ITM Cup tea. Both are top class rugby players and very skilled…..in my opinion.

Tara dropped me back at Daffodil and headed out with girls, after rubbing some much needed cream onto me.….to give daddy a break’

Tried to have some Rice Risotto for tea but no good

Not feeling overly flash so hit the hay. Probably a bit dehydrated or maybe just due to a bit of pain.

    Tuesday 23rd Feb

Chemo Week 5 -Chemo has been Cancelled due to low Blood Count.

I am quite devastated. However I have been told it will not affect my chances of cure and that is what I was most worried about.

Low Blood count is caused by Chemo, not me, so there is nothing I can do about it.

They are going to get me to do bloods again next Monday and see where we go from there.

    Radiation Treatment went fine.

Back to unit and then topped up on drugs. Forgot to put my!@#$%ing clamp on the feed tube so halve the shit I had, came back out. So don’t know if I had correct Morph dose or not. What a !@$% idiot!!!!!!

Drove up to Northlands and Tara had the most delectable Hot Roast Lamb Sandwich, while I had a Coke Ice Cream Soda.

Back to the unit and Tara put cream on for the first time today. Should be put on more, probably but it makes such a mess and not a good look in public. I look like the abominable snowman.

Had a visit from Craig, my Manager. Really good to catch up.

I am sure most of you know by now that Craig’s lovely wife Tracy has set up a Give a Little page on the Web:

    Zane's Cancer Diary February 2015

    Tongue & Tonsil Cancer

    ChemoRadiation

    January 2015

    Wednesday 11th Feb

Normal Routine – Out of bed, change the PEG Dressings, Shower Shave Shampoo, Flush Peg

Smoothie with Banana Milk and Yoghurt no taste and very hard to swallow.

Radiation Treatment and visit with Registrar (Trainee Radiation Oncologist).

Still no mouth sores as yet. PEG in good shape.

Very Very sore Throat. Could be painful maybe.

    Prescribed Morphine

Managed to get about half a tin of Spaghetti with cheese added plus a poached egg down for tea. Plus a Fortisip. Takes about 30 minutes to get down and is obviously quite cold towards the end.

Having being taking Gelclair which I reckon is really good.

    Thursday 12th Feb

    Fortisip for Breakfast, No kidding!!!

Did a bit of work work and Tony picked me up to go to Northlands Malls.

Tony took me to show me his homestead when he was 15 years old, the start of Northend Hotels LoL

    Tony’s First Hotel

A little bit of shopping and purchased a decent slow cooker.

Lunch in the Mall mine consisting of a Mac’s Lime Milkshake; lovely, with Tony enjoying a hot Pork Sandwich and a Coke,

Groceries from Pak N Save which Tony kindly carried for me, back to unit to drop everything off and then Tony dropped me at Hospital for treatment.

Many Thanks Tony. I sincerely appreciate your ongoing support

Had an unexpected visitor in Nona, my dear friend Sonya’s sister who was heading to the opening of the World Cup and Fireworks display. A really good old conversation and discussed the ways of the world and I thoroughly enjoyed her company. Thanks Nona

Fortisip for tea and I cooked some Salmon, Mashed Spud and Pureed Carrot and Parsnip.

Salmon a bit overcooked which made it a bit hard to swallow.Even smothered with Hollandaise Sauce there is no taste and it takes an eternity to eat.

I have had 180 Fortisips delivered to my room and my dietician wants me to have at least 6-8 per day…..!@#$%ing walking Milkshake machine….You reckon!!!!

    The Lovely Sonya and Piet

    Friday 13th Feb

You wouldn’t believe it !!!!!! Yes right the first time. Another Fortisip for Brekky. Early Treatment and on the shuttle at 0830.

Quite a fright during treatment. You must remain perfectly still during treatment as otherwise you may get a zap in the wrong place and that would be no good for Jo Jo!!!!

With it getting harder to swallow and even a little struggle to get my mouth piece in, it is getting a little scary. You hear the machine moving around you and you know when it is going to “fire”. You try timing your swallows in between.

Right near the end I was having extreme trouble and started gagging just as they finished. They only just got the mask of in time and I was dry reaching. Very Very Scary believe me…..no exaggeration or dramatization intended.

Craig, my Manger and Murray Straight, work Colleague called around for a visit and Craig, God bless his soul brought me around a media player full of movies and set them up for me. A good chin wag and they took me up to Northend Super Centa and back.

Craig, many thanks, you know how much I appreciate your support. Muzz thanks for your time and ongoing support…..and don’t forget that good Catholic prayer!!!!!

    Craig Denny – My Manager

Spent most of the afternoon doing some Work Work

Made some Cauliflower and Broccoli Soup for tea loaded with cream, chicken stock, and Paprika.

Not nice so another you know what. Yep right again!!!!!!!

Very tired as I wake up early and don’t get back to sleep.

Went down to the Communal room where there is Sky to watch my beloved Crusaders. The outcome was not good.

Billy Guyton Waimea Legend was on the bench but should have been playing.

Billy G had rung today to offer me a ticket but it is best that I stay home unfortunately.

    Thanks Billy appreciated.

One dimensional play by Mitchell Drummond isn’t going to win games.

Back to room and reluctantly taking my first dose of Morph (5mls)

Have been worried about this but throat is getting out of control.

Up during the night as usual, saltwater gargle and now spitting a lot, heavy mucous.

Took some more morph and seem to be OK but mouth still sore sore

    Saturday 14th

Out of bed around 0830 showered and duties done, Fortisip and walked up to Merivale to Mackas.

Ordered Pancakes extra butter Maple syrup and a Mango Pineapple smoothie.

Taste was terrible Managed to get down about 1½ Pancakes and half the Smoothie.

    Waste of Money!!!.

Bought a few Groceries and walked back to the Unit.

Good to go for a walk as my exercise is basically nil.

Washing completed and watched a little bit of Cricket.

Lunch – Caramel Milkshake with yoghurt

    Looking forward to chill laxing.

    Lovely little Nana Nap.

Phone call from my old mate Chalkie and also spoke to his Dad John a top man……..John not Chalkie…..just kidding mate.

Had some tea, half a tin of Pumpkin soup, and managed to get a whole packet of Two Minute

Noodles down…Who!!!!!!! Fortisip think I might be eating too much.

Wastched MC and then end of Chiefs game. Missed seeing J.Lo’ (James Lowe) Waimea Legend

    score opening try

Skin starting to get a bit burnt, so put on special Cream.

    Sunday 15th Feb

Sleep in after taking some more Morph. Very hard to swallow still and quite sore.

    Brekky…u know wat

Had a visit from my old Ecolab Colleague and genuine good guy Wybe de Jong and his lovely wife Linda. Wybe hired me when I was employed me by Ecolab and has always been a true friend, taught me heaps and we both enjoyed the social life.Thoroughly enjoyed catching up with them both and chewing the fat. Thanks Wybe/Linda. Sincerely appreciate your support. Wybe you are a good bastard!!!!

Lunch consisting of Caramel milkshake and yoghurt and managed to soak a couple of tablespoons of Nutri Grain in some milk and get it down me.

!@@#$ the low flying duck I could eat a horse and its back legs. I could murder a Roast!!!!!!

Going to kick back and watch some of Craig’s Movies.

Watched “Walk Amongst the Tombstones” and Fight Club which I thought was a bit different.

Attempted two Scrambled Eggs with Parsley for Tea but only got about one egg down even after taking the Xylocaine to numb the mouth.Made an Iced Coffee which was not too bad. Bitter but at least I got it down which means a few more calories.

Throat very sore and will be talking to Dr. tomorrow.

    Monday 16th.

Fortisip for Brekky by mouth. I have had to succumb unfortunately and have my first Fortisip down the PEG with the assistance of the syringe to push it through. Definitely no way theres a Rib –Eye going down here.

Have been taking Paracetomol and Morph Regularly but throat not responding.

Bit of Work Work this Morning with treatment and bloods this afternoon plus appointment with my Medical Oncologist (Chemo)

Headed off to Merivale Mall to meet up with Elise.

Elise is the wife of Jamie and mother of Jens the little lad that I met three years ago when getting my prostate Treatment.

Jens was Four years old at the time and was undergoing all sorts of treatment for adrenal Cancer including Stem Cell Replacement Radiation and Chemo.

Compared to what I am going through now, which is getting tougher, this guy and his family have been to Hell and back on more many an occasion.

Craig my manager who is a good friend of Daniel Carter arranged a visit for the little guy which at the time lifted his spirits no end.

Had a wonderful catch up along with Elise’s Mum Linda and her new son Lars.

    Elise shouted the Iced Chocolate.

I found it quite emotional as I regard Jens as an absolute inspiration and if he can get through want he went through I am sure I can.

Hugs and Kisses when we departed and Elise presented me with a $50.00 Fresh Choice Grocery Voucher which again was overwhelming.

Elise you are an amazing person and I know what you have been through.

Thank you for the gift card. Truly appreciated with reluctance

Back to Daffodil to prepare for treatment including upping my dose of Morph to 7.5ml

Bloods first, Appointment with Kate my Medical Oncologist who prescribed a laxative to get them good old Bowels moving.

Treatment on Radiation Machine which I was dreading after!@$&in near choking on Friday.

Warned the staff who were all ready to go if it happened.

It went without a hitch and I didn’t swallow once for some reason. I was wrapped, with high Fives all round with the treatment team.

For Tea – Yep you guessed it Fortisip. I cooked a whole Flounder with Lemon and Dill Seasoning. Usually all my fish is filleted and flounder reminds me of whitebait. Managed to eat it all…..small flounder.

Tried to have a cup of Thai Chicken Soup but too much spice unfortunately.

Tuesday 17th Feb -Chemo & Radiation day

Up early shaved shampooed no shaving any more as it takes the skin off.

(Cream now being applied to neck and throat area as starting to get a bit “Sunburnt”)

250 mls of Water down the Peg plus 1 200ml Fortisip. One Fortisip by mouth. Anti- Nausea Pills swallowed, 7mls Morph and 20ml Liquid Paracetomol. Try that for Brekky……Yum!!!!!!

0820 Shuttle to Hospital and checked in @ 0845 form 0910 Chemo. At 0925 have seen no one so receptionist contact Nurse………..Yep forgotten about again.

Found the veins and finally got out of there @ 1230 so late for Radiation @ which was booked for 1130.Radiation again went well. I think I have worked my breathing out and my swallowing.

Got dropped off at Daffodil Lodge at Riccarton Rd and walked up to Riccarton Mall.

Iced Chocolate for Lunch followed by a haircut.

Hair has fallen out in clumps at the back but not as bald as me old mate Chalkie…….yet.

Had some Gel put in just for kicks!!!!! Man did it improve my looks. Made me look about 45.

    Mutton dressed up as Lamb!!!!!!

Few Groceries at Pak n Save and walked back to Daffodil Lodge to catch shuttle back to Daffodil House.

Bought some Gurnard for tea at a fish supply. Cheaper than Pak n Save and looks a lot nicer

I am sure most of you know by now that Craig’s lovely wife Tracy has set up a Give a Little page on the Web

    https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/supportzanebeloe

I have been deeply humbled by this and for those of you know me not something that I would subscribe to. I have never asked for money and it is not in my makeup to do so.

However on discussing not only with Craig and Trace and other close friends I have accepted what she has done and have reluctantly given it my blessing.

As per Tracy’s introduction on the page it will go a long way to helping with the financial pressures including lost wages of family members and the lovely Jo Jo who is self-employed.

Tara, No.1 Daughter arrives at the end of the week and Jo Jo arrives the following week as it is envisaged I will need help and support by then. Side effect are supposed to get worse for two to three weeks after treatment finishes.

However I will be the judge of whether I need it help and support.

“When the going gets Tough, The Tough get Going”

I am also looking seriously into Acupuncture for Pain relief and fixing my taste buds, salivary glands etc. Treatments are approx... $70 a visit * 20 plus and you have to give these things a crack.

All funds will be accounted for and any leftover will be used to host the biggest BBQ in Richmond not that the famous yearly event is not already the biggest.

What has blown me away already is the number of donations have received, the amount, and the people they are from. A lot of them do not receive my blog and not only has this again been humbling but a touch emotional. Persons I know and have not seen for years.

Many Many Thanks to all who have donated and left messages, Sincerely appreciated.

One guy an old mate of my Son Zac, namely Jay Wagner made a large donatin with the note

    • jay wagner

“Bout time i payed you back for sleeping in your bed while you were away and me and zac drank all ya booze!!”

I coached Jay at rugby when he was a kid, hugely talented. He is now a Champion Kickboxer I’ve been led to believe, so not much chance of giving him a twat.

This is not cry for help and far from it. No one and I repeat no one is under any obligation.

Tracy and Craig thank you once again XOX

  • Zane's Update

      16 February 2015

Firstly thank you so much for all your generosity to date for Zane's page. In just 4 days $1,530 has already been raised to assist Zane financially which is incredible!

Zane's treatment is causing much pain now, and reluctantly he has to take Morphine regularly to function. Zane had a quiet weekend loving the abundance of brilliant sport to watch with the beginning of the Super 15 and Cricket Workd Cup.

We will keep you all informed with regular updates throughout Zane's treatment.

Thanks again for your love and support...let's keep sharing this page x
