  • Treatment days 14 and 15

      10 September 2015
    Main image

What a busy day today, treatment went well this morning as per usual, Skyla was up at five and wanting to head over at 6:30 so she could eat her breakfast, she almost ran up the hill to get there. After treatment we went for a big walk to Newmarket and fed the pigeons at the fountain, Skyla chased them around the square and was too fast for me to keep up, laughing all the way, it was so good to see. We saw two trains too which was very exciting.

Clinic was good and Doctor Steven says he is happy with how she is responding to the radiotherapy.

A very knackered wee girl (and mummy) now, so we're chilling on the couch watching a movie and eating dinner before we both get an early night.

  • Weekend 4 Sunday 5th Birthday cont.

      10 September 2015

We held a 2nd, 5th birthday on Sunday for the extended family and due to the overwhelming support from performers, cake makers and food providers it was decided to invite everyone at Ronald McDonald House to join in.

Thank you so much to everyone who helped to organize it, to make it happen and to everyone else turning up, we are still overwhelmed by it all.

There were face painters, a pirate, Dora, Elsa and Anna and the Mad Bubble Scientist along with lots of donated food. We all had a great day!

Words can't explain how grateful we are for all the time and effort everyone put in and how awesome it turned out.

Skyla had an amazing day and was the happiest I had seen her in a long time and didn't want to stop partying even when it was bed time.

We fed the crocodiles and now Skyla is feeding fer face with fish and chips before we head out for a train ride through the dinosaur enclosure!

Princess got to see a crocodile feeding show today with a 50year old croc named Scar.

Last day of treatment for the week, we're over a whole hour and a half earlier than we need to be because Miss Skyla is feeling very hungry and impatient to get it all over and done with.

There's a fairy visiting from fairyland later today, which Skyla is pretty excited about, Butterfly Creek on Saturday and a second big birthday party on Sunday, bring on a very fun, and probably exhausting weekend!

Woohoo! Day 11, one third of the way through treatment today! It doesn't feel like it's been that long already.

Skyla is such a champion getting through this, bring on the next two thirds!

Happy birthday to my beautiful little girl. We have not long gotten back from her treatment which went really well.

She woke up to presents at the end of her bed so she was excited to open them along with everything else. She has definitely been spoiled today and she still has a day or 2 of getting spoiled this weekend. Love you so much, your such a brave little girl xoxox ??

    Love daddy

What a day so far! Skyla was given her very own Elsa dress, got a Elsa cake and then next thing you know the REAL Elsa came to visit (see photo Gallery for pictures of Elsa)

Can't believe you're five already, such a big kid. So glad the birthday party was such a success, especially when Elsa turned up to spend the afternoon. I'm so pleased you enjoyed the day bubby girl, you've been so brave, you really deserve it. Love you all the way up to the cow jumping over the moon

Hurrah, it's the weekend, breakfast first thing in the morning, finished second breakfast and now she's hanging out for lunch, oh dear, this appetite is immense but we don't want her popping.

Skyla's walking is still showing improvement and she lifted her left hand up to try to hold on to the toilet rail too, so proud of how very strong you are, it's so good to see.

Daddy wants to spend some quality time with Skyla this weekend.

    Off to Kelly's again!

Spent last night with Daddy and Catherine, now having a nap and fast asleep after going to kelly tarltons and seeing all the fish, sharks and penguins etc again.

  • Radiation Days 3 - 7 Monday 24th - Friday 28th

      30 August 2015
    Main image

Off for round four of treatment this morning, as per usual all Miss Skyla can think about is getting over there to get it over and done with so she can feed her very hungry tummy.

First day of physiotherapy today too!

Skyla really enjoyed playing with the lovely ladies at physiotherapy this morning, so many cool toys to play with and now we have exercises to do at home to improve her core strength and get her left hand moving again too.

Day five, playing with bubbles while we wait. This is starting to feel very normal, not sure if that's good or not.

Skyla barely even complained about not being allowed breakfast this morning, all she wants is to get going so we can get it over and done with

Day six of radiotherapy today and Skyla is feeling a bit over it, perked up bit with new beads and a sticker for her chart, and keen on the idea of nana making some pancakes for breakfast when she's finished.

We're awake again, muesli bar with mummy and nana has gone to make pancakes!

We had a walk, a real walk and not a push, super strong legs and getting sturdier every day.

Day 7 Waiting for brave wee Skyla after taking her in to radiotherapy. She was sooooo good about no breakfast today. Have a lunchbox and drink waiting for when she wakes.

Need more pancake with my blueberries. Lucky Nana had a big favourite Milo and Otis on the laptop.

Something is working. Skyla is calmer and walking better and lifting her left arm up to the table where before it would remain in her lap. Seeing oncologist soon and physio at 2pm.

Oncologist happy and going to try reducing steroids.

Physio is organising boot and glove to help with Walking and hand strength. Back there Monday

  • The Weekend - No Radiation

      30 August 2015
    Main image

No radiotherapy today, yay weekends. Skyla was very excited to be allowed breakfast first thing in the morning.

Still wobbly but much steadier than yesterday and still in high spirits, very excited to visit all the animals at the zoo today if the weather stays okay.

You're doing so well miss, keep being strong.

    Sunday 23rd

Today we went to the domain and fed the birds, ducks, pigeons and big greedy geese. Only a momentary distraction though, with the steroids, all Skyla can think about is food (She didn't eat the bread for the ducks though!)

Back to Ronald McDonald house for movies and popcorn and a bit of a well needed rest before starting treatment again tomorrow. This is going to be a loooong week for this little girl

  • Radiation Therapy Starts

      30 August 2015
    Main image

    Thursday 20th August 2015

Radiation therapy begins, the day starts by arriving at Building 8 by 0830 Skyla having not eaten all night is hungry and is not afraid to tell us so.

We are met by Skyla's buddy who takes us through and we put Skyla's sticker board on the wall, this is so we can mark off the days as we go.

Then out comes the bubble machine, to take Skyla's mind off what is ahead.

Then they are ready for her and Skyla's Mum takes her into the therapy room a couple of minutes later and she is back, we wont see Skyla for 2 hours or so as she needs to have a pick line put in her arm for administering the general anesthetic in the days to come.

1130 and we get the call Skyla is awake, she is very sleepy, grumpy but most of all HUNGRY, a ice block does not satisfy the hunger, nor does toast but some chocolate coconut milk ice cream comes close.

Dad arrives from Tauranga in time to take her back to Ronald McDonald House at about 1430 - along day for someone so small.

Friday 21st a 0930 appointment this time and Skyla is not amused this no breakfast business is just not on.

However an hour later she is awake and tucking into a good breakfast and perks up quite well.

Her mobility this week has declined and she is quite unsteady, cannot use her left arm and needs help walking but is just as determined as ever.
