Looking for support to send our hardworking and talented rowing crews to the National Rowing Championships in Twizel

Auckland

The Aon Maadi Cup is the New Zealand Secondary School Rowing Championships regatta which is , being held at Lake Ruataniwha, near Twizel at the beginning of April.

The cost of competing at these national finals is $48,000. This includes the entry fees, accommodation and transportation of our crews (31 rowers), our dedicated coaches and all of the necessary equipment (8 boats, oars, riggers, tents, food, drink etc.)

We are currently deploying a number of activities to raise the necessary fund for our crews to compete at the Maadi Cup, and are not asking for a hand out, we are working for it.

On 12 March the rowing crews of Takapuna Grammar School are completing an Erg-a-Thon where each crew member will row for four hours, and as a club target a total distance of 1,356,300 metres - the distance from our school to Lake Ruataniwha.

All funds raised will subsidise the costs to get our team to Twizel from Takapuna ready to compete.

Please help and make all of the daily 5:30 am starts worth it...thank you so much for considering us.

Takapuna Grammar School Rowing Club's involvement (page creator)

TGS Rowing is both a Rowing Club and a Rowing School. We are a non-profit organisation, managed by a volunteer committee of parents, and a fully affiliated Club with the Auckland Rowing Association, and also affiliated to the Secondary Schools Rowing Association.

The core philosophy of the program is teaching the athletes how to achieve excellence through discipline, hard work, and perseverance.

We pride ourselves on the spirit of achievement by participation, and our club policy is an inclusive one ‘all those who want to row, can row’ welcoming all students who wish to participate.

Opportunities are provided for students with a wide range of athletic abilities to become highly trained, competitive, and successful student-athletes. Team members will build strength and endurance; develop time-management and self-discipline skills, and the confidence that comes with being an athlete.

Our programme is designed to assist in the development of the skills necessary to allow our rowers to accomplish their goals and be successful. In addition to becoming a more accomplished and technical athlete, rowers will see an increase in fitness, rowing intelligence, confidence, leadership, and personal fulfilment.

Admittedly, the early mornings and physically demanding training are not for everyone: it’s a big lifestyle commitment but rowing also offers enormous rewards and lifelong friendships to those who make the effort.

About us

Takapuna Grammar School (TGS) Rowing Club has built a proud history providing a secondary school rowing programme which competes at both local and national level fostering rowing’s traditional values of teamwork, discipline, focus and determination.

The rowing programme is carried out by a dedicated team comprised of school staff, voluntary coaches, parents and our rowing crews, and a key part of our operations involves raising funds to support our crews to attend the local and national rowing regattas and to ensure we are able to we are able to continue to invest in our wonderful facilities and equipment.

We made it to Twizel!  14 March 2016

What a fabulous day for an Erg-a-Thon!

So many people stopped by to have a go, to buy a sausage, look at our boats, sample some of our delicious baking or just support the crews in their efforts to 'Row to Maadi"

A special shout out to all friends and family, who tirelessly helped throughout the day, and a special shout out to the Bill Caruthers Secondary School Rugby team from Ontario Canada. It was great to meet you guys, we hope you enjoy our beautiful country and good luck in your matches...

Our fundraising still continues, and we have 17 days left to still raise as much money as possible to cover the travel, logistics, accommodation and regatta costs for the National Finals in Twizel.

Thank you for your continued support
