Our story;
My mum Heather and her fiancée Drewe have had a huge year so far. It started when my step dad to-be suffered a major heart attack on Friday 31st January, and was in hospital until 6th March. During his time there he had double bypass surgery and a pacemaker put in. It was a really hard time for the family and especially my mum who was by his side every single day worried that she may lose the man she is due to marry.
She was his rock during that time, she hardly slept or ate as she was working 8 hr + shifts to pay the bills and by his side 10 hours each day - sometimes longer. My grandparents, my siblings and I did what we could do to help financially and preparing meals, shopping, helping with housework and taking care of Daisy their dog.
Their wedding is planned for Saturday 14th November, they had to start using some of their wedding savings to make ends meet when they were on one wage.
Then, just when things were starting to look up for Drewe and he was in his last couple of weeks in hospital recovering, my mum received a phone call advising that a biopsy she’d had on her breast was positive for cancer.
The cancer was discovered as she’d found a lump on her breast and had it tested, it was benign and non-threatening, it was however right in front of a cancer growing in behind. The clever doctor who noticed something wasn’t quite right on the ultrasound sent for a biopsy.
That benign lump most likely saved my mum.
Since the diagnosis Drewe has gone home and mum has had an MRI and two surgeries to fight the cancer. Both surgeries resulted in finding positive cancer cells, and the most recent surgery has left her numb under her arm.
Mum was unable to work as she was deemed too vulnerable. Wedding savings have been diminished to zero. Mum returned to work part time at level 2.
Initially, Covid-19 took chemotherapy off the table for mum as if she caught Covid-19 with a lowered immunity would be too high of a risk.
On Wednesday 13th May her case went back to the board and they have recommended chemotherapy to start as soon as Thursday 28th May.
It’s important to note about my mum, her two favourite things she loves most about herself is her beautiful hair and nails, two things she does spend money on and takes pride in. She will lose both of these because of her treatment.
My mum, like most, has been a very loving and supporting role in my life, she is a strong woman who always finds a way, and she is the kind of person who would give the shirt off her back to help a stranger. She has been there for me and my siblings through the good and the bad. There are many things that I simply could not have done without my mum and I love her dearly.
So, to give back to mum and all the wonderful things she is to me and has done for me I want to fundraise, with proceeds to go towards her wedding and the Cancer society. The activity I am planning to do on my upcoming birthday is to shave my head and get a tattoo on my head (in public and a live feed on the internet!). I haven’t decided yet what the tattoo will be – it’ll be my first, and it will be something meaningful.
I am the daughter of a Breast Cancer Chemotherapy patient, and I wish to raise funds to contribute to her upcoming wedding, and also wish to donate to the Cancer Society to show our support for the fantastic work they do.
All of the proceeds will cover the cost of the wedding and the remainder will be donated to the Cancer Society - Otago.
