Shining light on darkness, raising awareness for suicide awareness by creating a safe space for individuals to learn tools of self-care.
Christchurch, Canterbury
If not all of us, many of us have been affected by suicide.
Recently we lost a great friend to suicide. We're doing this fundraiser to provide financial support to Patty’s family but also to raise money for suicide awareness. We are creating Wananga that gives individuals tools to address historic or current trauma. A safe space is provided to concentrate on self and overall wellbeing.
Faryn Ngawaka - Patty was a beautiful soul, my best friend for over 30 years! We were born in the same room 7 days apart!
Patty was a true, loyal friend, dependable, loyal, and loving!
Patty also carried a lot of trauma, which I only learned about following his death. This trauma, along with various ‘life events’ ultimately leads to Patty taking his life by suicide.
His passing has left family, friends, and myself shattered, I saw firsthand the impact it had on his family and his son Taine. The ripple effects are far-reaching, emotionally, financially, psychologically, etc.
I’m doing this to raise awareness about suicide and mental health and to break the stigma and stop people suffering in silence, to normalize the conversations when we are suffering.
On behalf of us all involved, we’ve all personally had our battles with mental health/ addiction.
Through exercise we have found healing, raising awareness, and shining light on the mental health/ suicide prevention space is something we are all passionate about.
TBM empowers individuals, primarily youth & young adults, & their groups, such as whanau, hapu & communities, to address barriers to wellbeing & success in life; through education, resources, & tools, alongside stakeholders & services in NZ
The fundraising will be used to run suicide prevention wananga based on kaupapa maori models of practice as this will be used to reconnect the individuals. Also, some will go to the Patrick Aliifaalogo's family too to help with the loss of Patrick (Patty).
