Our wonderful and generous friend Lorien needs gender-affirming top surgery, and we are determined to ensure money isn’t a barrier.
International
Lorien has top surgery booked for the 11th of December, 2023. He has emptied his Kiwisaver account to utilise $25,000 towards the cost, but the total bill for the surgery has been quoted at just over $35,000, meaning we need to crowd-fund the remaining $10,000.
Earlier in the year, Lorien had fundraising plans, but Long Covid has so impacted his physical health that he has not been well enough to make this happen. This is more than just surgery - it’s a necessary step for him to feel whole and better aligned with his gender and body. This will be an emotional and challenging process, made exponentially harder because publicly funded gender-affirming surgery in Aotearoa, New Zealand, has a ridiculously long wait list, so long that he was told it was not even possible to get onto this list in the foreseeable future.
Lorien deserves to feel at one with his body and not have money stand in the way of this becoming a reality. Anyone who knows Lorien knows his generous spirit; he is a deeply appreciated and well-loved member of the Naenae, Lower Hutt community, a fantastic friend, a talented artist, and a steady advocate for minority groups.
Research shows us that very few (if any) trans people regret the decision to get top surgery, and the large majority report decreased gender dysphoria and an increased sense of self-confidence and comfort in their body after completing this step in their transition or alignment process.
Help us make this surgery a reality for Lorien.
We are the “Get Rid of the Tittie Committee”, a small group of Lorien’s friends who are determined to raise funds towards his gender-affirming surgery.
All fundraised money will go directly towards the surgery cost. Any money over the target will be used for post-surgery recovery. If we don't meet the target, the money will be ring-fenced for a rescheduled surgery once adequate funds have been allocated.
Message from Lorien (an update from the update) 7 December 2023
I am overjoyed to announce that my top surgery is going ahead for this coming Monday!!!
Thank you all who have contributed to this massive flood of generosity with every fiber of my being. I don't have words to explain how loved up and supported I feel but I expect they will come in time. To say this surgery will give me a new lease in life is barely scratching the surface.
We are so close to the original goal of 10k, less than $800 away including the money raised through different avenues such as the art auctions / sales and the movie fundraiser. A truely mammoth effort and more than I ever thought was possible.
However, I didn't manage to get as much as I expected out of my kiwisaver. Due to fine print that was only conveyed to me after the application went through, I'm actually still 5 - 6k away from affording this. While I've managed to wrangle a way for the surgery to go ahead due to the amount already raised, my journey isn't over yet. I will take the rest of the year to rest and I hope in the new year (health permitting) to utilise some of my half finished art projects from this year to pay for the rest of this surgery. If health not permitting, well, we'll cross that bridge when we come to it!
Watch this space folks, but for now please be gentle with yourself over this busy and polarising time of year.
