Preserving the natural beauty and biodiversity of this forest for the Nelson community.
Nelson
Kellys Conservation Forest is a 15 hectare site in Nelson. It includes an original, primary lowland forest containing many rare and unusual flora and fauna, giving it Significant Natural Area status with a ‘high rarity’ score.
This rare, protected (via DOC covenant) and cherished Nelson conservation forest is now at risk due to a neighbouring development which has been approved by the Nelson City Council.
The proposed subdivision is planning to discharge an additional 5 households of stormwater and sewage into our community conservation forest.
Damage has already been done from changing stormwater paths above the conservation area (pictures in gallery).
We can take action to prevent any further damage from happening! Your donation will help cover the legal costs, expert advice, and ongoing protection of the forest for future generations to enjoy.
Our community project has been officially running for over 37 years. During that time we have increased the size of the forest area six fold. This area is all planted out, has trails, bridges, picnic areas, lookouts and seats all through it. It is a unique environment for the community to be actively involved in conservation, education and recreation. Since we began, it is estimated that over 100,000 community volunteer hours have gone into the project and that it has had over 50,000 visits.
By giving just a small amount, you can make a huge impact in preserving the natural beauty and biodiversity of this forest for the Nelson community.
