Helping care for New Zealand's Wild Horses

Northland

The Wild Horse Project is a registered charity that helps with catching, caring for and rehoming northlands wild horses. With anywhere from 20-50 horses coming through our yard each year we aim to provide the best care and best start to their domestic lives.

Funds raised go to covering

Hay & Feed

Veterinary bills like routine castrations, foal checks and emergency care

Worming

Farrier care

What do things cost?

A big bale of hay that feeds 3x horses for a 5 days usually costs $85 our feed bill annually is usually well over $45,000 dollars

Wormers $30 a horse

Farrier Carre $30-$60 a horse

Castrations $600-$800

Why do we take horses out of the wild?

Unfortunately with no natural predators horse populations quickly get out of control and wild or feral horses often get themselves into trouble with traffic, breaking onto private land and in bad years starving or losing access to water. We help manage the population to ensure the best welfare for the ones left wild as well as those we bring into domestic lives.

We aim to give the horses the best start so they can go on to be happy, well educated and loved riding horses, kids ponies, pets and competition mounts
