Most people think there is a night shelter in the Auckland central city. Sadly, this is not the case.
If you’ve spent any time walking around the streets of the central city, you’ll know about the problem. There are homeless people sleeping in doorways, alleyways, in parks and on benches in the street and there are many you will never see because they are skilled at hiding away in bushes, the graveyards and other places where they feel safe.
But they are not safe.
They are abused and subject to physical and sexual assaults. In 2018, more than 50 homeless people died outside and alone on the streets.
We want to create a safe, warm and welcoming night shelter where men and women can sleep, shower, do their laundry and access basic needs such as clothing and regular food.
We think it is a shameful situation that Auckland city does not have a night shelter when so many other towns and cities in NZ do. With your help, we will put this right.
The NEST-Night Emergency Shelter Trust
Funding is needed to help set-up and fit out the night shelter. This will include all the building compliance requirements, furnishings and the first two years’ lease in advance.
