Send Tom Spencer & Levi Hibbert to the World Rogaining Championships

  • WRC 2016 race day!

    We started off conservatively, opting to take a minute detour to access a river crossing to avoid wet feet We normally wouldn't have worried about, but given that it was the only river on the entire course we thought It prudent.  We then went reasonably fast, but not unrealistically so for a few controls, until we were forced to a slow by the 'spinifex' which I would liken to a bush made from thin barbecue skewers, except sharper, and as you can see from the map at http://vra.rogaine.asn.au/wrc2016/docs/Map_withImages_LR.pdf (nb our map doesnt have pictures, they were just given to us to show the type of terrain). There was a lot of green on the map, most of which was spinifex, so we had very sore legs and hands, and plenty of splinters by the end of it! However soon after this my feet became very sore, on account of the huge numbers of rocks everywhere you could look, and It quickly became apparent that it was that, along with my knee which would be the limiting factors on our speed more so than fitness. Luckily levi had us covered with the navigation through what I though was tricky bush in the south of the map, while I battled. We ran out of water for about 4 hours,  which was hard to deal with In the heat so we were relieved when we arrived at the  "all night cafe"  where we filled drink bottles, got some free food and quickly warmed by the fire as we taped up our feet again. We then headed off and managed to get ourselves lost on a similar spur to the one we were looking for. The next few controls went a bit awry as we got more tired. We found ourselves skipping parts of our original plan to move fast back to the hash house (start/finish) so that we would not lose any points for being late. However we ran Into some fellow youths on the way In and raced them back, In case we had the same number of points( as In that case the team with the lowest time wins), however we got there with 50 minutes to spare, so we decided to drop our packs and  hoon up to one final 80 point control, muscles complaining on the way up, and with Levi falling over and breaking a rock with his head on the way down. We hurried back at what felt like a sprint to our tired and shattered bodies, but was probably more like a frantic jog, and we just made it back at a time of 23:52; 8 minutes before the end (midday). As you might imagine it was a great relief to sit down and relax after months of preparation and stress, knowing that it was all done, and we could just wait for the results. As it happened, the last 80 point control we dashed up to stepped us up from 70 points behind 2nd place,  to 10 points ahead! We were estatic at this news, knowing that we had given it everything.     We would like to thank you once again,   particularly to the George Mason charitable trust, the NZ rogaining associaton through navlite, bivouac outdoor, and every single one of you who gave us any kind of support, we really couldnt have done it without you.   • In alice and ready to race!!

    Hey guys,

    We are finally in Alice! Levi arrived here safe and sound on Wednesday as planned but I had some dramas and had to get a new passport and ha rebook flights, however we are both here now and fizzing up to compete! It's a scorcher here and as you'd expect for the middle of the outback, it's just red earth spreading out as far as the eye can see. Levi is already at the race start (ross river resort) where we are camping, and I'm on a bus at 3:30 to join him. We will hopefully have have a wander round the preparation map tomorrow to get our heads around the terrain and how bad the fabled "spinifex" plant really Is. We have been warned that It's worse than spaniard in nz and "if you can get a needle through your shoes, spinifex will get through" so It will will be interesting to see how we fare. There is no reception where we are going so I guess the line will be quiet for a few days, and I'll just report back when I return to civilisation. We have plenty of food for the days, although the pre dehydrated meals I prepared were confiscated in border patrol (where they were shooting the tv but I managed to slip through without being filmed). but for the race we are stocked up with gels, lollies, cookies, creamed rice, chocolate, corn chips, nuts, bananas liquid food (like up and go), powerade, and I'm hoping to pick up something savoury before I'm head out into the wild. For those of you who haven't experienced endurance racing, the idea is that you consume a mix of high and low gi (glycaemic index - how fast your body burns them) foods so that you're constantly at at a high energy level. This, coupled with optimum hydration, is key to peak performance, as well as being a good excuse to eat anything you feel like! On Saturday we will face what we have been working up to for months, so I'm hoping for success, but at the end if the day it's fantastic to be here, in one of the most biologically diverse regions on earth.   • Heights Of Winter

    On the 25th of June, Levi and I travelled up tto mount Somers for our last big training event before the taper to worlds; Heights Of winter. The temperature was in the negatives overnight so any ground that would have been swampy was frozen solid to begin with. We started off well, going at a strong pace and getting most of the nav nearly spot on, but tragically after about 3 hours my knee began to hurt, so we thought better to pull out, and recover before worlds, so that we could perform at our best then, which was definitely the right decision.

    Hey guys, firstly I want to thank each and every one of you who has donated, or supported us in any way, the trip really wouldn't have been possible without you. Its amazing to see the amount of support from the community and really does a lot to restore one's faith in humanity. I thought I'd update you all on where we are at so far. We have been doing our own training over the last year, then over the last few months, have been stepping it up so we are maximally prepared for the coming event. In February, both Levi and I competed in a team in the NZ rogaining champs which was inland from Waikouiti, near Dunedin. It was my first 24 hour race, so it was quite an experience, and a good one to have under my belt, however tragically one of our team was injured, so we were disqualified. The rest of the team was able to finish the length of the race, clocking in some good miles and getting the highest score for a U23 team unofficially. In late may, I competed in the 50th annual TWALK, a 24 hour rogaine, however it is a little different as it was in a linear style, i.e. the points were lain out in 5 consecutive loops, so there was little opportunity to make different route choices. It was also interesting as the first leg was in fancy dress, which made for some interesting photos. We covered about 109km over the 24 hours, which was, by a great margin a personal record for me. In June Levi did the High country Brevet, which was a bike race over two days, in which he covered about 450km; getting some long hours in the saddle! we are now preparing to make the journey to Alice Springs, and are looking forward to the good weather!!
