Project Jonah wants to improve their response to whale strandings by buying equipment for their Top of the South Island trailer.
Nationwide
Marine mammal welfare charity Project Jonah has been responding to strandings across New Zealand for over 40 years. With our network of trained volunteers from local communities, we make a difference by caring for whales and dolphins when they find themselves out of the ocean and stranded on the beach.
The top of the South Island has a long and unique association with marine mammals. Sadly this is a result of frequent pilot whale strandings in the area. Luckily we have lots of keen, able and trained medics who are ready to respond to the call for help when they are needed. We just need the equipment to help them.
*** On Valentines Day this year, 198 pilot whales stranded on Farewell Spit. With the help of members of the public and our trained volunteers, we were able to save 67 of them. However, we were short of specific equipment ***
The hardest part is done. We have the trailer, dive tanks and specialist whale lifting gear. Now we need your help for the rest! We have a long list which includes first aid kits, radios, briefing billboards and a portable kitchen. We've secured some great deals to make sure every dollar raised goes a long way... but we need those dollars and that's where you can help!
Our goal is a MINIMUM of $2,000 for the bare essentials. But every extra dollar raised will help us to buy more equipment.
Thanks for your support and for giving us the best chance of saving lives.
I'm Kyle and I'm a trained medic with Project Jonah - I've volunteered at several strandings. It’s amazing to spend a whole day working with a team to keep a stranded whale alive, then seeing it swim away with its pod. Often we've needed specialist equipment which hasn't been available, so we do what we can with what we have and hope for the best.
After a long day on the beach , getting back to the stranding base and being given a hot cup of tea and something to eat is priceless!
I want to make sure we give every stranded whale a chance, and every volunteer the equipment they need and something to eat. I know they need it and I know you can help us!
Kyle
We are best known for providing 24/7 emergency aid to stranded whales and for training members of the public so they have the confidence and skills to help when whales strand. We also organise beach clean ups and deliver marine environment education to schools.
Progress Update, 2nd March 2015 2 March 2015
With a just under one week to go, we’ve reached almost 60% of our target, thanks to 30 generous donors – you guys are awesome!
The best news is, last week we received confirmation that the Vodafone New Zealand Foundation will be matching every dollar raised through their Double Your $ Employee Programme. What does that mean? If you donate $20, we receive $40. How great is that! Thanks so much to the Vodafone Foundation and Kate for supporting us.
Please share our fundraiser with your friends and family, $2,000 is our goal, but every extra dollar raised will go towards vital life-saving equipment for our stranding response trailer based at the ‘Top of the South Island’.
