60% of children in rural Tanzania do not complete primary education, stuck in a life of extreme poverty. Help us to change that statistic.
Nationwide
So They Can is working with 9 primary schools in the very poor and remote district of Babati in Tanzania. These schools collectively education over 3500 children. All these schools suffer from severe over-crowding with classes as high as 120 children taught by one teacher. On average 5 children share one desk and one text book and many have nothing to write in or with. They come to school without breakfast or lunch having walked up to 15 kms a day to get there. Because of this they faint and fall asleep in class and are unable to learn. The younger children aged 5 & 6 are left to play in the dirt as there is no money for resources and not enough teachers to go around. So They Can is working with these schools to improve the education these children are receiving to ensure that they complete primary school and make the transition to secondary. We are taking a holistic approach as we believe it takes not only good teachers and adequate resources to deliver quality education but children who are well nourished and cared for. We are providing breakfast and lunch programs and ensuring there is access to safe drinking water. We are providing desks, text books and learning materials and working with the teachers to improve their teaching knowledge. We have set up a college to educate new teachers to reduce the classroom numbers and ensure that all ages from 5 through to 12 have a teacher to teach them. Come join our fight and help us to help these children break free of poverty.
