Financial relief to get my uninsured daughter back on track after losing most of her possessions to flooding on Friday.
Eden Terrace, Auckland
Friday night’s devastating rainfall in Auckland has affected so many people including my darling daughter, Madeleine (Maddie) Adams.
6pm Friday and Maddie and her flatmate had been cooking dinner, upstairs in their townhouse, completely unaware of the chaos ensuing outside. It wasn’t until their other flatmate called them from the carpark to ask if they had seen downstairs. Already shin deep water was cascading through Maddie’s downstairs bedroom and garage. Maddie had only moved into the townhouse a few weeks ago and had been on a 14-day project so many of her belongings were still pack in boxes on the floor. She has pretty much lost all of her stuff…her apple laptop was on her bedroom floor as was most of her clothes, shoes, books, records, bed, dresser, drawers and a beautiful Fender acoustic guitar. Her laptop and her bedroom furniture is what she needs help with replacing as these are essential items for her work and wellbeing. As with most 20 somethings there was no contents insurance in play…a cruel lesson. I am appealing to Maddie's friends and family to see if you’d be willing to help a girl out and give just a little to help her get back on track.
NB: photos supplied were taken after the water had begun to subside and much of the damaged items/boxes had already been lifted to safety.
Anything raised over and above our target will be donated to support other victims of the Auckland floods.
I'm her Mum.
Replacing apple laptop (crucial to her work), all essential bedroom furniture including drawers, dresser & bed.
Thank you, thank you, thank you 13 February 2023
Hello everyone, Maddie here!
As the Givealittle page closes tomorrow, I thought I’d take this opportunity to give you all an update, and thank you once again.
Over the last two weeks, our flat has flooded not once, not twice, but three times. Twice during the initial floods, and once already due to this cyclone. However, I think the worse part of all, is that the property manager company still deem the property as ‘habitable’ and therefore are not letting us out of our lease / are still making us pay rent. Absurd, right?
We are in the process of fighting this, and hope it swings in our favor.
In the meantime, I have been simply blown away by the generosity people have shown on this page. I’m struggling to put into words how much it means to me and how truly grateful I am. The money raised is going towards replacing much of the items I lost and wasn’t able to salvage. Which unfortunately, was a lot. I have already been able to purchase myself a new laptop, and once we get out of our current lease, will begin repurchasing all of the furniture that was destroyed.
In addition to money, the offers of food vouchers, clothes, a place to stay, etc, have been so helpful and so so appreciated. I am so overwhelmed by the kindness shown by everyone in my life.
So thank you again, to everyone who has donated or who has offered to help in many other wonderful ways. These past few weeks have been some of the most heartbreaking and stressful of my life. However, I am full of love and gratitude because of your collective kindness. I feel very lucky, after feeling very unlucky.
I hope I get to repay the favor one day (just not under the same circumstances)!
Love always,
Maddie xx
