Vet Costs for Jessey

  • Back to 90%

      23 June 2015

About $2,000 has been spent so far and we have ongoing costs to look forward to.

So thank you, so very much, to everyone....your contributions have meant more than words can say!

Jessey is now on a low, to basically no, protein diet. His liver is not doing it's job and when he eats the ammonia produced goes to his brain and he goes wobbly, walks in circles, headpressing, is at risk of seizures....symptoms of Hepatic Encephalopathy. On the diet he is much happier and, I would say, back to 90% himself. He will have ongoing medicines required to keep bacteria in check (normally something the liver does) , special food and regular blood tests to keep an eye on things. He may be ok like this for weeks, months or (fingers crossed) even years. There is no way of knowing how long he has left or when his liver will pack up for good. Incidentally, the team at Massey discovered some serious disc degeneration. While Jessey was under sedation he tried to bite the radiologist when he was pressing too hard near his spine. If you knew how placid and easy going Jessey is you'd know how bad that pain must have been for him to do that.

Big hugs and love to everyone again, thank you all so much :)

Jessey spent two days at Massey University Vet hospital with specialists poking and prodding him. He was a very "challenging case". Still awaiting the results of some liver function tests and then the vets will give me their final analysis and advice on the way forward. I will post an update when I have more information.

Jessey is still very wobbly from sedation, with shaved bits here and there and a very sad face :(
