Four girls. One boy. One outstanding Robotics team!
On Saturday 8 December, a team of five students from Manchester Street School, Feilding, qualified as champions, winning the coveted 2018 Elementary Excellence Award at the New Zealand VEX IQ National Championship held in Palmerston North.
Their team 11446A “Odderbots” (aka MMAT-Bots) qualified to compete in the VEX IQ World Championships which are being held in Kentucky, USA, in April 2019. For this team, the trip to the USA to represent their school and New Zealand is the opportunity of a lifetime.
The budget to send the students and supervising adults to the World Championships is over $30,000. We are already proactively seeking funding from New Zealand businesses and other charitable organisations to enable us to reach our financial target.
Every cent helps, and your donation will help us to send the Odderbots to Kentucky to compete alongside the world's best teams for the title of World Champions. Imagine that!!!
Your donations will assist in covering the student's travel and accommodation costs and help subsidise the cost supervising adults and a teacher who will travel with the team.
The Odderbots received the following commendation from the Judges:
“The Excellence Award is the highest award presented at the VEX IQ programme. The recipients of this Award is a team that exemplifies overall excellence in creating a high quality VEX IQ robotics program. This team excels in many area and is a shining example of dedication, devotion, hard work and team work. This team is committed to qualifying in everything that they do, and is a strong contender in numerous award categories. This team or programme deserves to be recognised for building a quality robotics programme.”
It has been fascinating for us as supporting parents to watch the journey our children have been on this year in the Manchester Street School Robotics programme. They have learnt to work collaboratively to overcome problems in either the design or construction of their robot, and gained valuable skills in teamwork and technical engineering. No mean feat for 9 and 10 year olds!
