Waiheke homeschool kids set their sights on Japan
Waiheke Island, Auckland
In late 2026, the Waiheke Homeschool group (ages 11-13) have the opportunity to realise an art and cultural exchange to Tottori, Japan. They will take local kiwi handcrafts to a rural community of children through a series of creative open workshops.
This small group of tamariki (children) learn together under the guidance of dedicated parents and local experts. They learn organically and we are blessed to see them thrive across all educational planes in mind, body and spirit.
It is wonderful to witness them supporting each other to achieve their aims. Now together they have a new goal: to go to Japan and experience something beyond the confines of our small but deeply appreciated community. We believe they are ready for the school trip of a lifetime!
One of our parent teachers, Hana, is from Japan and the children have shown a natural curiosity to learn the language and deepen their understanding. Hana's teaching of core numeracy and literacy skills is woven through with art and creativity, enabling the children to evolve and thrive as they learn.
All of the parents work and support the children's education to the utmost of their capacity but sometimes we need a little help - that's why we are seeking your financial support. Further fundraising efforts concerts, bakesales and craft markets continue on the island, we are happy to share updates with you.
Funds raised here will cover travel costs for five children. It's a big project but they can do it - with your help!
Hana Kumagai is a local artist and teacher who has been teaching Japanese to the children of the Waiheke Homeschool Group through her arts and craft based approach to education
Money raised will cover the airfares from Auckland to Japan for five children aged 12-14
