Supporting the care and rehabilitation of the stray dog who spent over a year living in the Waitangi Regional Park area in Hawke's Bay.
Clive, Hawke's Bay
This beautiful girl has become a local celebrity in the past year with reports of her being seen in the Waikahu Wetlands and Waitangi Regional Park area dating back to Cyclone Gabrielle in February 2023.
It's with great relief that we can share that she has been rescued and is finally safe. We'd like to thank everyone who reported seeing her, gave her food and let her play with their dogs. Despite her fear of humans she stayed in the area and that’s thanks to all those positive experiences. We believe she's only about 2 years old so it’s amazing to consider how well she survived.
She's currently in foster care and this page has been set up to help with her medical costs, ongoing care and rehabilitation. It will take time for her to adjust to domestic life and trusting humans, but she’s in great hands. She now has a new name after reaching out to the Ātea a Rangi Educational Trust, in recognition of area she previously made her home, Waikahu.
Thanks goes to the local community for their support, especially the group who helped with this rescue, support and advice from the SPCA, HBRC, Augusta Grayson at Proactive Canine Training (who is currently caring for her), Vet Services Napier and Don Schwass - NZ Dog Tracker who offered his expertise and time for free (also on Givealittle https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/aoteroas-nzs-dog-tracker so please give him a donation if you can!).
We'll post updates of her progress and we look forward to seeing her going from strength to strength!

Waikahu Update 14 May 2024
Hi guys, we just wanted to say a HUGE thank you to all of the amazing donations and support we have received for this wee girl. It's been almost a month and she's progressing so well - it's amazing! Your donations have helped ensure she has great medical support, a great diet (much better than before!), calming support and a gorgeous new collar and lead! She has made new dog friends who she LOVES playing with, she has started to get mega zoomies which are super cute (see Facebook video link), she's met loads of new people and while she's still fearful, she is much more confident about being closer to them. We've explored new places including Havelock North Village where she did extremely well. We are now looking for a lovely forever home for her where we can continue to build on this progress and make sure she lives a life full of love and all the happiness that she deserves. She is definitely a Whippet X Collie, approximately 2 years old but seems very puppy like. She's smaller than the photos show! Please get in touch if you or anyone you know would be interested. Thank you again and check out the new photos if you haven't already seen them?!
Thank you so much Sonya!
