Watertank for Ruhija Village School

  • Final thank you to all donors!

      20 September 2020

With 8,000 L of water storage installed, and the remaining money spent on short term food supplies during the lockdown, I think we can be pleased that these folks' lives have been made a tiny bit easier. [Kate recently txted me to the effect that the poorer villagers lack the funds even to buy soap, increasing the ir post lockdown risk. I made a personal donation to cover that for a month or two at least.]

    Thank you everyone!!

The 3000 L water tank has been bought and transported, along with 14 x 25 kg bags of maize, 4 more than budgeted. (the tank was 997,000 UGX - number not clear here)

  • Money has arrived.

    NZ$ 700 = 1,600,979.00 UGX.

That's a better exchange rate than I anticipated, so Ruhija villagers get about NZ$100.00 more than I planned.

  • Possible change of plan??

      31 May 2020

Dear Donors, Lockdown in Uganda is being eased. I just messaged Kate asking when they might be able to install the extra 3000L water tank and this was her reply:

"I have a suggestion that we buy food for the school children instead of buying a watertank, as we are being affected by the long lockdown."

It's my own impression that the government has done it's best, but getting food to villagers has proved almost impossible.

We'll need unanimity from donors to make this change of plan. I'll understand if you disagree, so can you please leave a yes or no by June 12th.

I will ask her for more details about where and from whom they will buy food, and can they get receipts.

Yes from me - they know what's most urgent. Thanks for the updates :)

  • Ruhija watertank update

      28 May 2020

Thanks to you, our generous donors, the 5000L watertank was installed just before lockdown. Since then, Western Uganda has been subjected to massive rainfall causing many slips and major damage to Kilembe township where the main street was washed out.

The rain is now easing, and apparently lockdown is being wound back. The remaining funds will enable a further 3000L tank to be added, so I'll update that when we have confirmation. As the dry season starts, this extra water storage will make life much easier for villagers.

Kate tells me that the tank is installed. We still have funds to install a 3000 L tank once lockdown is over. Thanks once more.

If anyone needs to see the spreadsheet, do let me know. Currently Kate has the UGX equivalent of NZ$170.21 in hand, and I still have NZ$185 of donated money to send. Once lockdown is over, that should be enough to get the extra 30000L tank.

  • Success!

Kate has managed to get a 5000L tank with fittings. As the country is now going into lockdown, we'll have to leave the planned provision of an additional 3000L tank until the pandemic has passed....

I'll post a financial statement shortly.

  • COVID and transport

receipt for money from Kate. With public transport banned in Uganda, she's finding it hard to get transport to collect the first 5000 L tank. She's asked me to hold off sending the balance of funds, and indeed as we're locked down I can't. Once business opens up again, I'll send the balance and post an update.

    Hi Everyone

On monday I sent Kate NZ$945 = UGX1,924,669. She just acknowledged receipt.

She can't find an 8000L tank in Kabale (nearest town). We pondered 5000 + 3000, but that's more costly.

Sh she's picking up a 5000L one for now (that was our original goal anyway). Once we are out of lockdown we'll make up the difference and I'll post receipts here.

    THANK YOU ALL

  • Thank you, thank you all!

      23 March 2020

I've actually got tears in my eyes as I write this. We've exceeded our initial goal already. I'm now able to tell Kate that we can buy a bigger tank than the minimum 5000 litres!!

THANKS so much for giving a damn about other people.
