We need more fish bins so we can help feed more families
Wellington
Together, we’ve now diverted over 22,000 kgs of fish heads & frames away from waste and onto dinner tables.
Although we're sharing around 500 kgs every week in Cannons Creek & Naenae, there is much more demand for accessible protein. So as soon as we can, we want to start new distributions in three more communities (Wainuiomata will be one).
But we'll need more fish bins.
Our mates at Burnsco Seaview have offered a generous discount, so we only need to raise $2,920. This will buy us enough bins to share an additional 25,000+ kgs of nutritious and delicious fish parts, over the next 12 months. That's enough protein to create more than 14,000 meals, at a time when many families are doing it tough.
Anything you can chip in to help make it happen would be very much appreciated by many. One fish bin costs $30 and enables us to collect and share another tonne of fish heads a year. One chilly bin costs $208 and enables a community volunteer to share another 1,500 kilos a year.

The Kai Ika project utilises fish heads and frames that were previously going to waste, to share with families who love and appreciate this kai. We work with community partners and volunteers to get this nutritious kaimoana where it's needed most. And we’re supported by this amazing group of partners who help power the project: Rutherford & Bond Toyota, Silk Events & Design, Moana Rd, Phoenix Metal Recyclers, KP Marine, Capital Fishing, Canoe & Kayak, RedHot Marine, RoomMate Cabins and Dive Wellington.
Every dollar raised here will be used to buy fish bins and chilly bins. If we reach our goal, we will be able to buy thirty 54 litre fish bins and ten 70 litre chilly bins.
We did it! 29 November 2024
Wow.
Hearty thanks to everyone who has shared our fundraiser and contributed so far.
We’re stoked to share that Hugh and Dan from Ocean Hunter Wellington saw it, got in touch, and have come in real strong, effectively MATCHING everyone’s donations.
So alongside Maureen, Jerry, James, Nicola, Ella, Brent, Dave, Andrew, Michelle, Matthew, Terese, Maree, a very generous donation from BB Construction Limited and our mates at Burnsco Seaview - we now have enough to buy all 30 fish bins and all 10 chilly bins.
Thank you for backing us up. And together, making it possible to put a whole lot more nutritious kaimoana on dinner tables.
We’ll keep you posted when the new bins arrive and the new community distributions kick off.
Mauri ora!
