About:

We are 'The 312 Hub, A Place Where Youth Lead' through Community, Change, Creativity and Culture centred in the heart of '312' Onehunga. With a youth-led gallery upstairs and a creative studio for our wider community downstairs, we've hit the ground running to bring this much needed 'safe-space' for our youth and creative community since early March. Led by local creatives and residents Amiria Puia-Taylor (29), Jaimie Waititi (27) and Sabrina Puia (27) with the help of our ‘Lifesavers’ crew, friends and family, The 312 Hub is a response to the need for more safe spaces for young people to chill, hang out and feed their creative needs.

Since opening up our doors to the public, we have curated two well-received youth-led exhibitions by local artists born and raised in Onehunga with our current exhibition ‘Sup Sis!’ by 3rd gen - collective of sisters ‘The Palalagi Sister’s; Ceeroc, TabzJoynt, Hoodsavvy, Noodles & Te Wairua. ‘Sup Sis!’ Is an Ode to the hood that raised them and compliments The 312 Hubs’ very first 'youth-led' group exhibition 'Brothers Lord' by three of today’s leading male creatives’ Naik, Fasi & Serval Fandango. Over the last 4 months, both exhibitions have created a platforms with a wealth of diverse public programmes online, within the hub and in the minds and hearts of our wider community. Check out our facebook page for all the photos!

While we are JUST making do with the small funding we get from the odd mural or art project, we are still short on keeping up with the monthly bills. We need to raise $10,000.00 just to get us by until June 2019. Specifically, this will all go towards power, water, internet costs, $20 a month phone bill and our major bill which is our monthly rates. This equates up to $900 per month so receiving this kind of support will help alleviate the strain of finding resources to keep the hub running and also pay ourselves for the work to enable the invaluable work that takes place inside and beyond the hub.

Why donate? Onehunga has been air-marked for regeneration as a part of the long-term plan by the local government to make Auckland - The World’s most livable city. A part of the plans for regeneration means that Onehunga needs to be at the table to ensure that the changes suit the people and that the voices of our communities, especially our youth are included and embedded into the future planning. The 312 Hub is a pilot project proposed to prove to Panuku Development that our community want to be heard and that they care about the place they live in. Over the last 4 months, we have already had enough evidence by the local young people and wider community that they care. By supporting our Givealittle campaign ‘We need change, but we need your coins’ you will be helping The 312 Hub to continue on the dedicated work to empower our young people's’ voices to be the leaders we need, and ensure that their voices will be heard in the right spaces with the right people.

Kia mōhio, kia whakatūturutia mātou!

Let’s make sure we’re at the table!

The Rangatahi Hub Ltd's involvement (page creator)

I am one of the co-founders but everything we do is done together from concept to delivery. I am passionate about this kaupapa purely because I never had a safe space like this when I was young. It would always be a once a year opportunity with some other youth programme. Now, as an adult with some experience in how I can use my voice through governance and advisory work, I know how important it is to encourage the next generation to use their voice and ensure that they are well supported.

Use of funds

Monthly Rates, Power, Water and Internet alone is going to cost us $12,000.00 this won't include salaries or wages. Just strictly the things we need to stay operating. If any surplus is generated, this will be fed into programming.

Sabrina Puia - Manaakitanga  16 July 2018

Yay!

We made $50 in our first 24 hours of launching our #312GIVEALITTLE Fundraising Campaign! A huge mihi to all those who liked, shared, retweeted and donated. But let’s not lose the momentum! Over the next couple of weeks, we will share stories with you on what your investment will be invested into with a series stories from our 312 Hub whānau… starting with one of the more familiar faces of the space.. Our girl Sabrina (Sophia Puia-Schwalger)!

Born and raised in the heart of Auckland, New Zealand. From the family homestead that still stands in Ponsonby to Glen Innes where the sun rises to her teenage years in Orākei and Pakuranga, Sabrina now resides between both her worlds, here in Onehunga.

Groomed and nurtured by a culturally strong village, Sabrina’ pays homage to her blood ties to Aitutaki and Ireland through her father’s lines and her mother's lines to Rarotonga, Aitu, Aitutaki and Samoa. Sabrina lives and breathes her upbringing through her love for people, culture and most importantly through manaakitanga, serving and uplifting the mana of others. With 15 years experience within the Hospitality industry, Sabrina has a wealth of knowledge in serving others from training new staff to running a cafe to working with large teams as big as Big Day Out. She has become the common face in many of our local cafe’s here in Onehunga since living in Australia for five years as a young adult.

Today, Sabrina is the face of The 312 Hub and a living example of Manaakitanga, one of our three guiding principles of the Treaty of Waitangi. 'Mana' can mean power, influence or spiritual power and goes hand in hand with tapu, one affecting the other. 'Aki' meaning 'to encourage, urge on, challenge, induce, incite or exhort'. Ki te - meaning 'to' and Tanga meaning division, company, relay (of people), reinforcement. As a reflection of this role, Sabrina shares:

“The 312 Hub, my home, my space of safety and creativity. Helping hand in shaping what the hub will look like and represent for the generations to come. The 312 hub is everything I never knew I needed. Teaching me what I never knew I needed to learn, about culture, creativity, change and community. Onehunga is my new found home and I hope to become a part of the community that is fighting against its ever-changing face, to stand beside those who reign from the neighbourhood. The 312 Hub is my home.”

Sabrina’s heart of gold, selflessness and ability to serve others is fitting for her to become our full time Manaakitanga manager and is responsible for all of our experiences with people from our kuia and kaumatua to our bubbas. This love and selflessness can also be found in her little homemade soy wax candles business called Scentsitive & Co, hand poured with love.
