Help protect Wekaweka forever

  • We did it!

Thanks to all of the incredibly generous donors to the Wekaweka Valley campaign, we have raised the money we needed to purchase this area of significant natural heritage.

We’re now working with our solicitors to conclude the purchase and hope to take ownership within the next few weeks.

This has been one of the most successful public fundraising campaigns ever run by the Trust and it’s all down to the passion and generosity of Kiwis across the country who want to protect our natural heritage. The support has been incredible. Everyone at the Trust has been completely overwhelmed and we’re so grateful to have such passionate and committed supporters.

As with the other 7,000+ hectares of native forests and wetlands that we manage across New Zealand, the Wekaweka Valley property will be designated as a reserve and will be open for people to visit at any time. A covenant for permanent protection through the Queen Elizabeth II National Trust is placed on all of our reserves, keeping them safe forever.

The next step for us with the Wekaweka Valley property will be to put a management plan in place to make sure that the forest is able to continue to regenerate and that invasive pests, predators and weeds are controlled and kept out.

If you opted in to hear from the Native Forest Restoration Trust when you made your donation, we’ll keep in touch to update you on the plans for the property, and will send through some photos of the beautiful forest that you have helped to protect when we can get someone onto the property when it’s not raining.

We’ll also send you an invitation to the official opening, which will be next spring/summer.

If you didn’t opt in but would like to hear from us, please visit our website (www.nfrt.org.nz) and sign up to our newsletter.

  • We've almost done it....

We’re a few hours away from the official conclusion of our givealittle campaign to purchase 112 hectares of precious native forest in the Wekaweka Valley. With donations received through givealittle, and those that have come to us directly and through our website, we now have just less than $9,000 to go to meet our target. We’re confident we’ll be able to make up the difference in the time we have and want to thank you all for your incredible support.

If anyone reading this is still considering making a donation, there’s still time and your support could help secure this significant area of natural heritage. Please donate now to help keep native forest in the Wekaweka Valley safe forever.

You’re truly amazing. Thank you for all of your incredible support. We have three days and just under $19,000 to go to meet our fundraising target. With passionate Kiwis like you behind us, we know we can do it!

Please share this page with anyone you know who you think might be interested in protecting this little slice of New Zealand paradise for generations to come.

You’ve shown time and again what people power can do. How, by coming together, we can put our foot down and demand that New Zealand’s beautiful natural environment is protected for all of us to enjoy. Let’s do it again this time for this precious area in the Wekaweka Valley.

Thank you again for your incredible passion and generosity.

  • We have 5 days left!

In just five days time, 112 hectares of regenerating native forest in the Wekaweka Valley could be protected for all New Zealanders forever.

Thank you so much to everyone who has so generously donated to help preserve Wekaweka Valley. With the donations received from you and other givealittle donors, and those that we have received directly and through our own website, you have already helped raise over $153,000, which is amazing.

Monday is the deadline for the purchase of the property and we’re really close to our fundraising total. We have just under $32,000 to go to raise our total. And with fantastic supporters like you behind us, we know we can do it.

Our native forests are precious. Many of the plants that make them and the animals that live in them are unique to New Zealand. We’re the only people lucky enough to have them in our own backyard. But many of them are in danger, which is why it’s so important to protect every hectare that we can.

This is your chance to help protect a significant piece of this forest in Northland forever. Once the Trust takes ownership, it will be made into a reserve, keeping it safe from development and introduced pest species of plants and animals. It will be there for your grandchildren and their grandchildren to enjoy in years to come.

If you haven’t already, please make a donation today to help protect this important piece of New Zealand’s natural heritage. Every dollar helps. And if you’re one of our wonderful donors, please share with friends and family. Together, we can do this! Thank you.

  • We've almost saved Wekaweka

Thank you for your fantastic support to help us save the Wekaweka Valley in Northland and turn it in to a nature reserve for all New Zealanders to enjoy for ever.

We are in to the last few days of our campaign now and have until 15th May 2017 to raise the balance of funds required. We've been fundraising through multiple channels at the same time, not just Givealittle and at this stage we have about $135,000 towards the purchase price of $185,000 - so about $50,000 to go.

We are pulling out all the stops for the last few days. We need to get this message out to as many people as possible. Saving land like this is something close to all our hearts and I'm sure that if we can get this story in front of enough people we'll raise the balance easily. If there is anything more you can do to help spread the word, please do. Feel free to pass on this update email to your friends and talk about what we are doing on social media.

  • Is the Wekaweka Valley worth sharing?

You have helped us raise about $16,000 through Givealittle to protect the 112 hectare proposed reserve in Wekaweka Valley. To have raised that much in just a week is astounding. Thank you so much for your generosity and commitment to protecting our native forests.

We’ve honestly been blown away by the response. We’re not a large charity and we haven’t got as many supporters as some of the more well-known organisations but what we lack in size, we more than make up for in passion from our supporters. People like you. People who care about the future of our beautiful natural heritage. We’re very lucky to have your support.

We wondered if you would be able to help our campaign once more by sharing it with your friends? You can share it on Facebook by clicking the Facebook link on the top right hand side of our Givealittle page. Please feel free to write in the post about why you care about the campaign and why you would encourage others to support. Or, if you’d rather we have made some images you can post to your Facebook page with a link to Givealittle - you can download these from our website at https://www.nfrt.org.nz/facebook-wekaweka/

We know that people have friends with similar interests so if everyone who has already donated had one friend who donates as well, we could double our fundraising total almost overnight. That would be amazing.

We’ll keep you updated with how the campaign is going. We are fundraising through multiple channels at the same time, so we are actually much closer to our goal than the Givealittle page alone suggests.

Thank you again for your incredible support.

P.S. By sharing the campaign to purchase this special part of the Wekaweka Valley with your friends, you’re increasing the impact of your support. It’s really simple. Just click on the Facebook link on our Givealittle page. Thank you.
