Miramar Playcentre celebrated the completion of the construction phase on their new outdoor play space on Saturday 1 April. This milestone at Miramar marks the completion of outdoor construction work at 19 Playcentres across the Wellington region by Seymour Construction.

"It's great to finish off on a centre like Miramar that is really creative and completely transforms the area," said Rob Seymour.

Miramar Playcetre officially opened their improved outdoor environment with speeches and a community BBQ. Wibke Kreft, Co-President of Miramar Playcentre (pictured) has been a driving force to get the work done. She was excited to try out the new play spaces with her 6 year old son Konrad who started at Playcentre at 10 months old. They tried the new water pump that leads to a landscaped river bed.

More than 50 people attended the celebrations which followed a morning working bee where Playcentre parents and children helped finish painting and started the next planting phase. Planting is an essential element that will round off the major landscaping work and provide new sensory and nature play.

Have a look at some of our recent work-in-progress photos!

We are focusing on a final fundraising push to reach $50k by May.

$50,000 will ensure the Wellington Playcentre Association (WPA) can:

    - Finish the specified planting work at every WPA Playcentre, based on their outdoor landscape design plan.

    - Ensure completion of the final few Centres with outdoor construction work in progress in early 2017.

While many Playcentres have had the main outdoor construction work phase complete - some with fabulous new play equipment thanks to community grants - several centres haven't been able to finish the final planting phase due to budget constraints.

"The Playcentres who have been able to complete the planting specified - a core part of the design - they have really seen the benefits of sensory play on their sessions," observes Chris Montgemorie, Outdoor Upgrade Project Manager for Wellington Playcentre Association.

The planting is an essential element in each outdoor playground design to provide new sensory and exploratory play opportunities for Playcentre children.

"It would be great if we could see all Playcentre's complete their planting," Montgemorie added.

“A huge amount of volunteer effort is being contributed by Playcentre parents and whānau in each of our centres to make these upgrades a reality," said Ingram.
