  • We're on the home straight!

In 12 hours time, Nick will be in the water, in 13 hours, Shannon will be on her bike and in 24 hours, Charlie may still be running. It's crunch time. And carb time. Mainly, carb time.

The kiwi winos, Team WinoKiwis? have trained like Trojans and, thanks to you all, have raised a phenomenal amount in the process.

Now, before the race, they're in full carb loading mode and are deep in team tactics.

For those of you in Wanaka, there is a Wanaka Challenge app on which you are able to follow them. If you see them on the race course or on the sides, cheering their fellow Kiwi winos on, please give them a shout out, a pat on the back or, if they're up for it, buy them a drink.

Luck isn't a part of it - all we can do is wish them all the very best for tomorrow. GO YOU GOOD KIWIS!

  • Kiwi sighting in the Upper Clutha area!

      1 February 2016

Shannon seems to be something of a kiwi whisperer. On some of her recent training rides around the region, an errant kiwi has been spotted.

One of the clearest sightings has been on the Newcastle Track, heading out along the river. None seen yet in the East Matukituki area but, the way these kiwi winos are going, there could well be soon...

  • $4500 raised and 26 days to go!

AMAZING! You outstanding people have helped us raise more than $4500 for the Otago Kiwi Recovery Trust. Words fail us but this support has spurred us on even more as the days to the Challenge tick by.

There has been talk, by the water bound Kiwi Wino, of the terrestrial Kiwi Winos taking on their Challenge legs in the outfit below. What do you think?

Having done a 150km ride this weekend, we suspect that bikebound wino, Shannon, may have something to say about this...

  • Winokiwis? Wet and Wild

Last weekend saw the inaugural The Ruby swim event in Lake Wanaka. A calm and overcast morning yielded great conditions for the hundreds of people who plunged into the lake and took on one of the distances ranging from the juniors' 200m swim along the lakefront right up to The Ruby (2.5km swim out to, lap around and swim back from Ruby Island) and The Big Ruby (3.8km swim out to, 2 laps around and swim back from Ruby Island).

We all know that Kiwi can't swim (duh), so, under the guise of the Rippon Wineoscerii, two of our Winokiwis swapped wings and beaks for caps and wetsuits and swam the course with fellow Rippon team members.

Nick "Wineosceros" Mills took on The Big Ruby, hoping to complete the course in 1hr 15 minutes. Well, he didn't. He actually managed it in 1hr 06 minutes. Applause, please.

Shannon "Octopus Blanc" Foley, meanwhile, pounded The Ruby, placing fourth in her age group. She then topped this off with an after-swim 50km bike ride out to Treble Cone and back.

It should be mentioned that all of the Rippon Wineoscerii, from Tadpole (Toby, aged 7) to Cabernet Squid (Jack), Starfish Noir (Pete) and Gewurzhog (Markus) to Rippopotamus (Petr) put in an absolutely outstanding effort. They'll be taking on the Challenge before we know it..

Lest we forget our third Kiwi wino, Charlie, we should add, put in her apologies for the swim but put in a great morning's training, running the schlep out to Glendhu and back.

We have more images from The Ruby in our Gallery. Go forth and ogle...

The support coming in is phenomenal, we're overwhelmed by your generosity, thank you, thank you, thank you.

With the sun shining and the weather sweet, it makes Nick want to kick his swimming feet.

Looks like he may be inspiring the next generation of WinoKiwis? (and maybe Kiwi Winos?) to follow suit?

  • Cosmic Kiwi goes bush

Cosmic Kiwi, Charlie Mills, has spent the long weekend on the other side of the Lindis in the Ahuriri Valley, her second visit there within a fortnight. A glorious spot and clearly fertile training ground for pre Challenge runs - this weekend she put in a solid 22km.

    Go, you good Kiwi!
