Woolson was a sheep in need. Dannevirke SPCA volunteers need your support to help out more vulnerable animals like Woolson.
Hawke's Bay
Dannevirke SPCA was made aware of a sheep in need, stranded down a sharp embankment surrounded by the fast flowing Manawatu River. With careful organising and the amazing efforts of volunteers, we took off in a jet boat, made and captained by a skilled local lad.
We located the sheep, and got the literal run around his deserted patch then scaled the mountainous sides of the gorge. It was down by the very side of the river, Woolson the lonely ram decided he wouldn't mind being rescued after all.
Woolson having been safely rescued, vet checked and shorn, of his masses of wool, Is now hanging out with a couple of Sheila sheep and has a whole new lease on life- he is loving the new found company.
The take home message from this rescue is Woolsons life matters, sheep are flock animals and naturally want to live with others of their kind.
Although not all the animal rescue success stories involve a jet boat. Rescuing animals in dire need, whether it’s from starvation, abuse or neglect is a huge part of everyday life of a volunteer at the Dannevirke SPCA.
Whether it’s a pet dog, possum, tethered goat on the side of the road or even a farmed animal destined for the dinner table, all animals deserve to live without suffering and if needed a respectful and humane death.
The aim of this page is to raise funds and awareness for the Dannevirke SPCA.
We receive no monetary funding from National RNZSPCA, Government or even local body funding.
We were founded by local people 40 years ago and are still running on local volunteers.
We survive purely on donations from the public.
Whist our centre has the enthusiasm we are severely lacking in funding, resources and space.
Our centre is equipped to temporarily house up to 9 cats and 2 dogs, we regularly exceed double this capacity. We are forced to turn away countless more animals, offered up by community members trying to unload their unwanted animals.
We would love to raise enough funds to employ an SPCA Animal Welfare Investigator for the Tararua area.
Currently we do not have one and Renee Hickey from the Waipuk SPCA is being covering our area as well as her own (Central Hawkes Bay) for several months - no small feat!
We are only a small centre but we want to make big change for our areas communities and the animals that live alongside us.
Our area Tararua covers the towns of Norsewood, Dannevirke, Woodville, Pahiatua and Eketahuna,
We want to ensure we have someone equipped to respond to the many calls of concern for the welfare of local animals we receive every week.
We can defend the voiceless animals that are abused and neglected. We just need your help!
I am involved as I am the centre manager of our local SPCA Shelter.
I have one of the best jobs in the world, whilst it’s really sad at times yes, knowing that every day when I wake up I am part of alleviating the unnecessary suffering of animals in our area is priceless.
We would love to be able to do more, I have given up my paying job to take on this part-time role, in a more than fulltime capacity.
We have about 10 Volunteers at the shelter and they all give so much of their time to the cause, some of our volunteers have been coming in every week for over 5 years!
The people I work with at our centre amaze me every day, my goal is to help raise funds, gather the resources and engage with key people so we can all continue to work hard to help as many animals as we possibly can.
If money isn't your thing, but you would like to help us help the animals, you may be able to offer your professional skillset or donate some of your weekly time to our shelter animals, we would love to talk with you if you can help out in any way, we would be so grateful for any help.
Dannevirke SPCA is a member Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Covering the entire Tararua area including Norsewood, Dannevirke, Woodville, Pahiatua and Eketahuna.
We run a limited animal shelter that ideally caters for max of 9 cats and 2 dogs. More often than not we are doubling capacity and running on a purely voluntary basis, with the exception of our part time manager. With animal welfare as our main focus, we would love the capacity to do more, help more and save more innocent lives from suffering.
We are not Funded by the national RNZSPCA, government or local bodies. The only way we are able to continue to look after the vulnerable animals is through public donations and volunteers.
We are located on Easton street, Dannevirke. You can like us on Facebook to keep up with the animals we rescue and rehabilitate- Dannevirke SPCA
